Default Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.

I am considering painting my wheels black. I am tired of the vermillion red wheels on a 29 tudor. That would leave me with a black car, black wheels and blackwall tires. Anyone have any pictures of a completely black tudor or any model a for that matter. I have found a few searching the web but most have a color variation be it body, whitewalls or wheels. What is everyone's opinion.

Check out me and my restored 1929 Standard Coupe with Black wheels, Black tires and Black body on my website...As Johnny Cash said..."It came from the factory that way"! (From "One peice at a time") even before I restored it.

Here's mine with and without whitewalls, and, some years ago, with its wheels red. I really like the black better. Whitewalls are a whole other controversy

BLACK on BLACK and BLACK sounds like a great plan! DON'T even think of anything other than blackwall tires.

I'll not even approach the whitewall controversy. I'm a blackwall fan. Ya'll are making it real easy for me to paint my wheels black.

I am not up on pinstripeing, but you may have some subtle color options there to break up the black if you wish. I'm in with the rest. All black looks nice.

Here is my coupe ib all black, painted about 40 years ago or more, please excuse the snow, it is the only good picture I have of it right now.
Don't forget the black bumpers, mirror and headlight buckets, I wonder some days what it would look like completely blacked out...

I am putting Black Wheels and Black Tires on my '30 Std. Tudor. I painted the body Green but I do like the Black Wheels and Tires. (I drove a Green Tudor to College 50 years ago and am trying to relive my childhood, or something like that.)

I would like to restore a Coupe sometime. It would be Black, Black, Black. This is just like I remember most of the A's being in the "Old Days".

I DID NOT restore the '31 Roadster pictured in my Avitar. This is the way I bought it. I am NOT a big fan of White Walls but this is JUST MY OPINION.

Chris.

Henry Ford's personal Model A, a '29 Special Coupe, was black /black/black, but with a red stripe on the belt... looks pretty sharp...

I know Henry Ford was talking about Model T's at the time, but, when he said, "You can have any color as long as it's black" was the best thing that could be said about any color combination.

Pinstripe color?

I saw a Black Fordor with Tacoma Cream pinstripe and matching Powder coat wheels and Blackwall tires. If I only had the money back then...

Just my opinion, but my favorite model a's are all black, I don't care for ones that are all pretty with orange wheels, whitewalls, two tone paint, etc. They just look absolutely perfect all black. Just my opinion.

I agree. Model A's are simple cars, they look best when done in a simple style.

When you put on a bunch of aftermarket chrome, dual windshield wipers, wide white walls and other things along that line, it ceases to look like a Model A and more like an imitation Packard.

I have a '29 Special Coupe, all black, with black vinyl top, tires and even the exterior rear view mirror and conduits to the horn and lights are black. the only brightwork is the radiator shell and headlights, tail light and hubcaps. The zinc around the running boards is as original. I know some of the stuff is kosher, but the car looks great, in my opinion. By the way, Henry's personal coupe was all black...

Just throwing this out for consideration...

After making only all-black cars for most the of preceeding 19 years of Model T production, ( yes, there were exceptions in the early days and during the last year of production), Ford made a conscious effort to offer many colors EXCEPT black when the Model A was introduced. It could be special-ordered, but it was NOT a "standard" body color until mid-1930 or so, if I remember the Paint & Finish Guide correctly.

Yes, Old Henry's personal '29 coupe was "all-black", but then, it was his company.... he could also have had it painted in rainbow bands of color like a Ruxton if that was his choice.

I'm still struggling with the choice of picking colors for my '28 Special Coupe... none of the official colors really thrill me.

If someone is going to paint their car shiny-black, the sheetmetal had better be flawless...

Old Henry's Special Coupe does look stunning in all-black with a red stripe, but I'll bet the coachwork is in perfect condition too...

My car was black when I bought it in 96. I believe from what I can find, it was Andalusite blue to originally. It has never been professionally painted only years of a farmer brushing or spray canning it to protect from the elements. I don't intend on painting the car because I like the not so perfect look. I did paint the wheels vermillion red about 12 years ago. Now I'm tired of that look. I feel everyone sees red wheels coming and then notice the black car that is attached. I will either repaint them black or just find a worn rusty set to put on the car. I love the look of Bert's pick up he has on his website.

Jamie,

We just found some traces of original paint on my coupe... a very dark blue lower body ( probably Andalusite ) and one of the light blues in the reveals around the 1/4 windows... doesn't really match any of the chips in the P & F Guide, but it seems to be original...

My car got the rattle-can black treatment, and she'll stay that way for some time to come.

I've got a 5 yr old and a 2 yr old daughter who thinks my front fender is a "new" kind of slide. Guess what. I let them slide because I don't have to worry about the fender getting scratched.

I usually find what looks like a good 21" wheel for about $20 to $25. When I get them home and spin them, about 1 in 3 is good enough to use without some straightening. Look for cracks, welds, deep rust, and oversized mounting holes. I try to never buy a wheel with a tire still mounted, because no matter how good the wheel looks, the bead hidden by the tire can have rust holes. Yes, I bought one and learned, but I only paid $5 for it. Bad wheels can be welded together to make a lawn chair.

That would make a great christmas card.

I cannot believe this topic has resurfaced. I have a 5 year old daughter who has Daddy wrapped around her little finger. Everytime I mention it she says, "Daddy please don't paint them black I like them red". Sooooooooo no they are not black yet. I know there is only a short time she is gonna be interested in my "Bad Guy Car" as she calls it. The bottom line is, as long as she wants them red, I will lay my wants to the side. I sure do want to paint the black and would do so this afternoon if given the go ahead but, It sure is fun going down the road with her riding with me.

I am a big fan of black on black on black. To me the black wheels with black walls look more elegant than colored wheels and white walls. Dont hate me its just how I feel

JK ,Just get 2 different sets of wheels, Then both you and your daughter will have the best of both worlds. Her's will be Red and yours will be Black. Just a idea. Don

LOL. I have actually thought about painting the driver side wheels black and leaving the passenger side red for her.

Aug. 13 is correct and if you'd like to go,there's a cruise-in in Talladega near the Walmart today starting around 4-5 pm.Actually it's about a hundred yards to the left as you're looking at the store. I'll be in my '41 tudor. Hope to see you!--Bill

2 years and 4 months from the original post, I finally have black wheels. And I still have red wheels. I found a guy locally the had changed his 29 tudor to 17" wheels and he sold me his black 21's with a nice set of firestone tires. So I have my black wheels and my daughter has her red wheels. Maybe I should by her a Model A for when she turns 16. I've got 9 years to raise the money.

My wife Deb and my grand daughter with the coupe. We like red wheels. I sprayed the black single stage Sherwin Williams urethane nearly 20 years ago and it still cleans up good.

Enjoy it while you can! A lot of kids at 16 dont want to be seen around Mom and Dad and their old car any more....but hang on, the grandkids will love the old car.

My Town Sedan has cream wheels, which I like very much, and whitewalls, which I don't. When they wear out, I will buy replacement blackwalls. The black wheels look nice, but I am not going to change mine. I don't have a pin stripe, which I think I should. My paint is good, but not flawless, so not sure about the stripe.

Black is probably the best way to go. Solid black is definately easier to do than a two tone body with black fenders. Black is easy to match if ever needed and black paint is easier to locate than rock moss green or lombard blue. Ninety nine percent of the model A's that I remember as a kid was painted black.
