Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
I am putting Black Wheels and Black Tires on my '30 Std. Tudor. I painted the body Green but I do like the Black Wheels and Tires. (I drove a Green Tudor to College 50 years ago and am trying to relive my childhood, or something like that.)
I would like to restore a Coupe sometime. It would be Black, Black, Black. This is just like I remember most of the A's being in the "Old Days". I DID NOT restore the '31 Roadster pictured in my Avitar. This is the way I bought it. I am NOT a big fan of White Walls but this is JUST MY OPINION. Chris. Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
Henry Ford's personal Model A, a '29 Special Coupe, was black /black/black, but with a red stripe on the belt... looks pretty sharp...

Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
I know Henry Ford was talking about Model T's at the time, but, when he said, "You can have any color as long as it's black" was the best thing that could be said about any color combination.

Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
"Inexpensive to manufacture" was Henry Ford's favorite "color"...

Pinstripe color?
I saw a Black Fordor with Tacoma Cream pinstripe and matching Powder coat wheels and Blackwall tires. If I only had the money back then...

Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
Just my opinion, but my favorite model a's are all black, I don't care for ones that are all pretty with orange wheels, whitewalls, two tone paint, etc. They just look absolutely perfect all black. Just my opinion.

When you put on a bunch of aftermarket chrome, dual windshield wipers, wide white walls and other things along that line, it ceases to look like a Model A and more like an imitation Packard. |

Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
Take a look at the cover of the Jan/Feb Model A News. Gary Johnson's georgous '31 68C Cabriolet in all black with black wheels and tires. What more can you say?

Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
I have a '29 Special Coupe, all black, with black vinyl top, tires and even the exterior rear view mirror and conduits to the horn and lights are black. the only brightwork is the radiator shell and headlights, tail light and hubcaps. The zinc around the running boards is as original. I know some of the stuff is kosher, but the car looks great, in my opinion. By the way, Henry's personal coupe was all black...

Hey Chris. Saw your coupe at the Fletcher show. Looked as good in the day light as it did in the basement.

Jamie,
I think you should consider a black pin strip to set off the black wheels GW |

Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
Just throwing this out for consideration...
After making only all-black cars for most the of preceeding 19 years of Model T production, ( yes, there were exceptions in the early days and during the last year of production), Ford made a conscious effort to offer many colors EXCEPT black when the Model A was introduced. It could be special-ordered, but it was NOT a "standard" body color until mid-1930 or so, if I remember the Paint & Finish Guide correctly. Yes, Old Henry's personal '29 coupe was "all-black", but then, it was his company.... he could also have had it painted in rainbow bands of color like a Ruxton if that was his choice. I'm still struggling with the choice of picking colors for my '28 Special Coupe... none of the official colors really thrill me. If someone is going to paint their car shiny-black, the sheetmetal had better be flawless... Old Henry's Special Coupe does look stunning in all-black with a red stripe, but I'll bet the coachwork is in perfect condition too... |

Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
My car was black when I bought it in 96. I believe from what I can find, it was Andalusite blue to originally. It has never been professionally painted only years of a farmer brushing or spray canning it to protect from the elements. I don't intend on painting the car because I like the not so perfect look. I did paint the wheels vermillion red about 12 years ago. Now I'm tired of that look. I feel everyone sees red wheels coming and then notice the black car that is attached. I will either repaint them black or just find a worn rusty set to put on the car. I love the look of Bert's pick up he has on his website.

Worn, rusty, apple green has a very nice look. Just a thought.

Re: Black wheels, blackwall tires, black car.
Jamie,
We just found some traces of original paint on my coupe... a very dark blue lower body ( probably Andalusite ) and one of the light blues in the reveals around the 1/4 windows... doesn't really match any of the chips in the P & F Guide, but it seems to be original... My car got the rattle-can black treatment, and she'll stay that way for some time to come. |
