Re: A good story
Several items in that story made me wonder how much of it was "bench racing".

Re: A good story
I wonder what town Mr. Murphy lived in as we had plenty of rides that would probably have gave him a very good run for his money. My 50 chevy vert with a hopped up 270 jimmy would have been one that quickly comes to mind. There was my buddies 50 merc with a Columbia also & many others.

Re: A good story
Using average tire diameters, "90 mph in 2nd" works out to 6100 RPM....

Re: A good story
I agree with the "bench racing". I used "US Search", the author of the story is only 60 years old. He wasn't 5 in 1940.

Re: A good story
Yes, a typo on my part. I read his column in Hemings and the photo on the column title didn't match the timeline in the story. If his intent was to get people talking about the story.........looks like he wins!!....... Mark

Re: A good story
Wonders will never cease! Besides the '50 Merc with a Columbia on here, a commenter on the Hemmings site said his '50 Olds handily beat his neighbor's '59 Ford flathead convertible!
