The module behind the pedals bolted to the firewall has the ignition resistor and the lighting circuit breaker.

You are correct, '48 pass. car was the last year one was used.
'48 truck with the 8BA and '49-'53 Ford & Merc. did not use one.

As lonnie indicates,
Quote:

If you run an external Ballast resistor near the coil ( I do on my 8BA in my '35 ) make sure you find the internal one Lonnie speaks of and wire around it and eliminate it or you will be running through both when you wire you external one which will cause too much resistance and not enough power to your coil. As many say, " ask how I know.

Here's a Post and thread with good info on resistor type / rating.

Will bypass under dash resistor, and measure current draw of coil ,should be around 4 amps according to Bubba info,,, and go from there.. Thanks ..

Another resistor question. My 48 truck 8ba had one, do I need one when it gets changed to 12 volt?

It depends on the coil. You need to know the coil resistance. It does much matter what voltage or parts you are using the current across the points is what is important (there are other factors, but to keep it simple). So, you need to know the total resistance in the circuit, that includes the coil and any resistor. Need to start by determining the coil resistance. The original coil was designed to operate on ~8 volts max. A so called 12v system will be ~14.3v. If I was going to guess, yes you need a ballast resister. You want the max voltage back in the 8v range. I would also wire it with the starter solenoid bypass so the coil receives ~12v while cranking the starter.
