Unhappy Painting that red line on Firestone tires

I'm having a killer time trying to paint that red centering guide line on my firestones. Anybody have any tips or suggestions on how to get a better result?

Just a thought, is it easier to wipe off the excess than try to apply a even line? A damp rag with thinner wrapped on a paint mixing stick might work well.

I'll often use a small paint brush and "paint" Vasaline or grease on the part I don't want painted.

I'm not sure what the problem is though. Is the paint too thin, or too hard to keep a straight line?

First, I don't think I'd stand chance without a striping brush and striping enamel. Hopefully you read the thread linked below. If I was doing it I would have done just what Ward posted.

Do the Goodyear's have a similar stripe for centering with paint or just the logo?

I striped my tires with them mounted on the rims and inflated. I used a striping brush and spun the wheel on a Snapple bottle. It was actually pretty easy!

I bought the one shot paint in fire red. Tried to tape it off but didn't really work. Wonder how it was done at the factory? A stamp maybe? Or a stincil of some kind?

The tripple pinstripes on later 40 Ford steel rims were painted by spinning the wheel and holding the striping brush very still with either your hand or with a fixture.

Still a work in progress Brent. Probably going to keep trying new ideas or just end up having the guy who pinstripes the car do the tires at the same time.

Dr. Enrique Klein shared this pix of an original tire. although worn, it appears the red paint may have covered both (or parts) of the 2 ridges in addition to the depression (grove) between them.

when i did mine i thinned the paint a little, ran nicely down into the groove.

what are folks' opinion regarding the lettering itself? should the face of the letters be covered with paint or should they be black rubber. (even if originally covered, i suspect their face would have been rubbed off pretty quickly)

I would like to look at an original tire up close sometime because I would think the red inspection line would have been vulcanized into the rubber. I think Dudley probably has the right idea on how the logo would have been painted on. Maybe partial paint and partial vulcanizing???

This couldn't be a Ford exclusive, could it? I've seen some original Martins with colored logos on whitewalls. I googled some but couldn't find something specific to that deal. Any input?

Great Model A info WTSHNN, but my question was regarding the industry as a whole. So I can assume that all tires, regardless of the OEM using them, were "logo'd"? usually when I find an original tire it's lucky to have a sidewall at all, let alone 75+yr old paint in the logos. Like I said earlier though, I have seen Martin Super Cushions, NOS, with colored shields (or whatever it is) on WSW tires. And yes, as a Packard restorer, I'm interested in adding this detail.

On to painting rubber, a small addition of light oil into the 1-Shot, or some use castor oil, will let it remain flexible and last a lot longer. A bit of slow dry solvent 1st will allow some rubber "soak" or stain. Barring that, opaque ink would also be a good choice. The permanent variety can be reduced with alky and be made to soak into the rubber to a degree. Lastly, the medium they use to silk screen t-shirts is really flexible too. Think of how many lauderings they hold up to.
