Re: 36 gas tank neck help !
Got the neck out, pipe sealant on threads of pipe threaded neck and it was not leaking. The leak was occurring at the second arrow where the flanged neck slides inside the pipe neck.
Had a lead seal (as pictured) and still leaked like a sieve. Ordered a new lead seal but a lot of work if it doesn't work, remove fender, drain tank down. Also pictured the the Drake flexible gas neck than will fit either of the diameter (very stretchable. Tempted to go ahead and cut flanged neck off and connect to pipe neck with Drake hose. Using gas proof Permatex pipe thread sealant worked very well on threads tho. Welcome any ideas before getting out the cutoff tool.

Re: 36 gas tank neck help !
I use two lead washers. Also, the Drake filler tube is not bent enough and will be slightly shorter the OE Ford filler tube.......

Re: 36 gas tank neck help !
Filler neck is not drake, and the original is not rusty.
I am wondering if I should put the fender on and position the filler tube prior to tightening the threaded neck against the lead seal, otherwise it would seem you are taking a chance if you rotate the neck after you have seated it against the lead seal ??

Re: 36 gas tank neck help !
Obviously this is the way to do it. Pays to leave the rear fender brace off too, to give you more 'swinging room' for the wrench. Also pays to have a helper to hold the filler neck in correct orientation from above, whilst you swing on the wrench from below....

Re: 36 gas tank neck help !
Looking at these seals, I am surprised gasket material will not work, heck your carb and fuel pump have gaskets on them ?

Re: 36 gas tank neck help !
I too am surprised...see my earlier post where I explain I'm currently trialling a thick leather seal [to no avail]. I cannot get lead to seal, nor peek [a special synthetic plastic stuff]. Beats me, it is damn hard to seal petrol for sure.

Re: 36 gas tank neck help !
I think a friend can get his tig welding to seal after I cut the heck of one of Henry's bright ideas. The lead is not a good crush material to seal something as primitive as the flanged steel neck edge of the gas neck. If it was a flat surface to flat surface - maybe.
At least now I have a spanner to take it back off and fix it . Thats a positive.

Re: 36 gas tank neck help !
Would a large O ring work? I was able to seal mine with lead but it's not easy.

Re: 36 gas tank neck help !
Trouble with using o ring or gasket it has to be fairly thick and fuel resistant to seal the flange. If you just use a regular o ring it is not thick enough to absorb the crush needed to seal. Thats why guys are having to use two to ever get results.
I don't mind that but don't want to wait another week for a stupid lead ring to come. If I could get someone who will pri mail it please contact me . [email protected]
