What did you do today that was flathead V8 related?

I started my 33 coupe for the first time in a few years and identified a problem with the brakes. Today I fitted a new master cylinder and I just put an order into Rockauto for new wheel cylinders and kits.

This morning, at my V8 Club's monthly meeting, I owned up to the dreadful act of doing the responsible thing with my most beloved possession. I'm not getting any younger, and two days ago, I was quite suddenly confronted with an offer I couldn't refuse.
My 1938 Ford Convertible Coupe is now the garage mate with a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr Coupe. As you can see in the photo, the proud new owner of my pride and joy has brazenly stolen the smile right off my face.

Yesterday I helped a friend fire up a 49 Mercury truck that has sat since the 70s. Pulled the starter as it wasn't working. Reinstalled, couldn't get spark but turned over nicely. Plug wires were original and most were seized into the distributor cap. My buddy spent a good half hour digging them out. We made "new" wires from a chevy van he had parked for years. Wouldn't even sputter on 6 volts, jumped/boosted it with 12 and the engine fired immediately!! One mistake we made, was the carb was very gunked up and we didn't notice that it was stuck on full throttle. Wow did that engine rev high!! The inside of the carb is also messed up but we did manage to get it to idle for a bit and it sounded real nice, likely running on all 8.

He was very impressed and is going to rebuild the carb so we can play with it some more later. He is a chevy guy and had a hard time with the concept of the cylinder numbering as he has only worked on chevy V8s.

I'm amazed myself how that engine fired up and survived that high RPM startup lol. Usually I like to let them idle a lot before revving an old engine up. Durable engines for sure.

Went for Breakfast today,put another 50 miles on the 40, Found out that I have been going to that restaurant longer than the other guys at the table there were alive.

Stripped the 39 LZ rear end I bought yesterday...looks good; the bits I want....I run a Columbia in my V8, which is lowered. This tends to permit lubricant to run forward down the torque tube. As the Zephyr diff is hypoid, my thoughts are to run that banjo and the gearing, coupled to my existing Columbia and Ford housings, which will set the torque tube at a better angle. Looks like all I'll need to modify is the driveshaft and torque tube. And drill a coupla holes in each bell to suit the banjo.The LZ gearing is 4.44:1, currently my Columbia is running 4.11:1, and I'm running LZ gears in the trans. Gotta try these things. What a fantastic hobby, I never tire of playing old Fords!

This weekend brought more progress on two V8/V8 Era engines I am working on. Doing lots of detail work and assembly on the V8 going to Europe and on the 4cyl for the proto-type Ford Jeep

took our 1938 Deluxe coup out of its winter sleep-checked and clean tires-went for a drive- bought it in 1964, been driving it ever since; have drove it to several Eastern National meets, we have attended about 35 meets, most with coupe, some with 38 convertible coupe

Picked up my rotating assembly from the machine shop today for a balance job. 3 3/8 X 4 1/8.

I relined the front brakes ,changed eng oil and filter, greased the chassis and fixed a loose spindle pin on my 34 coupe, ready for the 2000 klm trip to the nationals leaving next week.
also made a cup holder for it.

Picked up the 99 relieved block from the machinist that I got him to hone to suit the new steel pistons I supplied. Unfortunately, the crankshaft I'd asked him to grind was cracked and bent, told him to put it in his scrap metal bin... now the hunt is on for a crankshaft! Oh, the fun of it, playing with all this old stuff, isn't it a great disease?
Incidentally, this is supposed to be a 'budget' build, just to use up some of the accumulated 'junk' [ask my wife] in my shed.

hate to hear that; but the time comes can't enjoy any more; old age is getting us, I'll be 80 in a few days, Thanks again for all your help getting our conv on the road, our friend from Kentucky stopped by; his dad bought the 38 coupe from the lady that bought it new; his son wahts it....someday

Yes, James, I was waiting for you to reference my post. It was a sad day and I still get depressed thinking about it. My heirs have other interests and wouldn't have done right by the car and it's heritage anyway. I always joked with Juanita about wanting to be cremated in my '38, but that would be so wrong on so many points. I do hope that now that it's gone you won't delete me out of your phone book!

I took Miss Daisy out for a Sunday drive. The new Electronic Voltage Regulator I installed inside the generator continues to work perfectly.

I just followed the greyhound wherever he led
