Default Model B Engine

Hello, I have a new to me 31 Ford with a B Engine installed. What is the best service/Specs manual to have? Also, looking to do an oil change. Does it take 4-5 quarts /10w-30? Thanks

10-30 is a good choice. Add 4 quarts and then check the dipstick and add till it is between full and low if more is needed. The owners manual is the first book to get.

Remember the owner's manual changed slightly over time so get the one closest to the manufacturing date of your vehicle.

The Model "B" engine is a spinoff of the Model "A" engine, but with a pressurized oiling system, larger connecting rod and main bearings, a more efficient camshaft, a fuel pump and a 3-bolt water pump. The Model "B" engine also has a higher CFM carburetor, a centrifugal advance distributor, and a different exhaust manifold shape. The Model "B" generator is slightly different. A jewel of the Model "B" engine is its camshaft which is reproduced for the Model "A" as a "Touring Cam."

The Model "B" engine was in vehicle production from 1932 through 1934, so the Ford owner's manuals and service bulletins for these years is the factory literature. The big green book has lots of sketches and part number info for the Model "B" engine.

The Model "B" engine was made for service and commercial applications by outside vendors up until WW2. These engine are the so called Diamond Blocks."
