Default Hot coil

Been driving around town at a normal speed and notice the coil is very hot to the touch?? The truck has a 12 volt system, new set of points, the coil is mounted to front head bolt. Got the drake conversion for tube coil on the helmet distributor. It's a 40 block with 100 amp alternator. I tried the coil with resistor inside and tried a coil with external resistor, same results. Thanks for any help!!

You need to measure the actual resistance of the coil ( and ballast resistor if used).
I have found that some of the 3-4 ohms internal coils do run a little hot.
A 1.5 coil would work fine with a external resistor of 1.5 etc as well.....

I just went through the same problem and ended up making a new coil mount that bolted to the intake. The head mount transferred way too much heat, especially after the engine was shut down. Bruce

Why don't you have an original coil for your distributor rebuilt by Skip and converted to 12 volt NEG ground. You will need a late 50, early 60s Ford resistor. G.M.
