What engine is in my 57 Country Sedan

New Member here. Recently got my first project car. 1957 Country Sedan modified by previous owners. Last owner was a business that used it as a promotional display. They are no help with history or tech details. She doesn't run and has not been started in at least 5 years according to PO. Seemed like a good retirement project.

I have learned a lot from other posts, but I'm stuck.
The S/N on the door is D7LX121171. If I am correct, this means the original engine was a 312 4BL. I think my engine is not original.

The engine code on the casting above the oil filter is ECZ-6015-C. It appears that engine was produced in 57 by Ford but I haven't found a list of applications. My service manual does not list this engine code as an option for the 57. Also, it has a 2BL carb and manifold.

The date code on the casting near the starter looks like "78 - (backwards)D" See photo.

I'd like to figure out the original application to help identify the carb (which needs work) and engine repair parts.

I’m sure it’s still a 312, all unidentified y blocks are 312’s, especially when they’re for sale. Seriously though, expect to be confused. Block changes, head changes, manifolds, all kind of combined are found on these old engines. Not surprising to find even mis matched heads from side to side, but that can be a result of a “service replacement” just carrying a different number. That’ll make more sense after you look at John’s site. Not to mention the various overbore sizes.

These old fords don’t have the documentation that the GM products often had, so don’t be put off by the lack of detail.

Check with Tim McMaster-Central california/Mummert automotive-So. Cal/Ted Eaton in Texas, their websites will have a break down of engine block codes. I am thinking you have a 272/292 as the blocks are all the same I believe. The 292 block is actually a stouter block from what Tim says, and you can always machine it into a 312 if you want.

To verify if you have a 312, check to see if there is a little pill on the crank flange, that is a very good indicator. Otherwise, you will have to pull the pan and check the caps. Welcome to the awesome world of wagons! Oh....we love pics.

ECZ-C blocks were used for 292's and 312's in '56 and '57.
I believe the ECZ-C block was mostly 312's.
In'57, 292's originally came with a two barrel carb only. Carb was either a first year Autolite 2100 or a Holley 2300.

Thanks for the info and great links. I've got lots to learn. I'm a fair mechanic, but this is my first old Ford. It was pretty well ragged out inside. PO told me that there was a homeless guy living in it for a while and at some point he started a small fire that burned up the wiring under the dash. The first several days were spent on interior tear out and Lysol. I have no illusions that she will be on the road quickly, or ever restored to original state, but I am having a BLAST tearing her down and learning how to put her back together. I get more excited every time I get a chance to work on her.

I'm sure to have a lot more questions for the experts here.

your car appears to have a '58 hood, as indicated by the chrome "hood scoop ". I cnnot tell much about your eng. from the pic, but I can see that it appears to have factory power steering.

Needs a little work, but looks like a nice start. Those 1958 hoods on the 1957s is considered a desirable bolt-on.

FORD used three different styles of 4V CARB (312CI) and two styles of 2V CARB (292CI) . Can you supply photo of what you have now and ASSY TAG ID if still there?

My carb is currently in pieces on my bench. it is definitely not original. Looks like a Motocraft 2150. There is no metal tag, but there is a paper sticker with a date written in pen. It is very faint, but i think it says it was rebuilt in 2017.

There also may be some ID CHARACTERS on the LS of the fuel bowl and/or LF mounting foot.

Are there any casting numbers on the dog to determine if he is the correct one for the car?

Yes, there are a couple marks on the body. A large '2', 'GB' and a round dial. See pics as requested. Also, I can make out "E9" on the written tag. There is more there, but I can't read it.

I can't find any numbers on the dog, but I'm pretty sure he belongs to a sofa or maybe a LaZboy.

Looks like about the last year for the 2150 Motorcraft carb.
guessing '89/ I did one that looked just like this on an '89 Mustang V6.

Yeah, without the ASSEMBLY ID TAG, makes it difficult to know what application and calibration it was used on. No matter though as it makes a nice street driver carburetor. Plenty of info on the inner-screen and Sal is always there to help.
