RT 66 after Bonneville and the Drags
Tom and I ran RT 66 from Joplin, MO to Springfield, IL the last two days. It was a nice change of pace compared to charging down the interstates. The most interesting sights are on the older sections. These were generally in use before 1950. Some of roads are minimally maintained and quite rough. These were taken slow and easy as not to beat up the roadster. It was cool to run this route in an old cars to experience how cross country travel was done back then.
A good section east of Carthage, MO. The steel bridge on the way to Spencer. Making a "gas stop" in Spencer. Spencer is store front restoration. Very photogenic. URL=http://s962.photobucket.com/user/chlessard/media/RT%2066%20Joplin%20to%20Cuba/image_zps908d7db2.jpg.html][/URL] Another "fuel" stop in Gay Parita. Boy that little car got thirsty on this part of the trip. Not really. Just some good photo ops. I like the gas war price of $0.15. The bridge at Devils Elbow. 66 was rerouted in 1931 so this bridge was made obsolete. The old road sections are very narrow. The end of RT 66 day one. At the Wagon Wheel Motel. This Motel is beautifully restored and is well worth staying at. You definitely get the '30s to '50s feel of this place. Bonneville, the HAMB Drags, the Starbird Museum and RT 66 have been an adventure any car guy should do at least once. If you are able and can do something like this by all means do. |

Re: RT 66 after Bonneville and the Drags
We are defineately having fun. It's to bad this little adventure is coming to an end. We left Cuba, MO for Speedway, IN. Tuesday morning. We ran 66 to Springfield, IL. Then picked up US36 to Speedway.
A couple of the murals in Cuba: RT66 Cafe and Belvedere Motel: The Shell station in Mt. Olive: We encountered a group, German?, touring on Harleys. They didn't say anything, but they took a lot of pictures of the car at the pumps. Bubba's shop in Speedway: The Speedway Museum: Then Bubba pointed us to Cubertson's Automotive shop. He has some real interesting things going in there. They are not exactly Ford Barn friendly projects. They are very cool. Last edited by 41ford1; 08-22-2013 at 08:28 PM. Reason: Wong pic |

Re: RT 66 after Bonneville and the Drags
Great pictures Chuck. I felt the same way when our cross country tour was coming to an end. So many great memories from that trip. I'm ready to get back on the road again . Looking forward to the PA tour next month and the Moonshine Festival in October.
