Earlier in this thread, someone mentioned roadside repairs, so I've posted a few "hard times" make and mend images.

(I know, I know... the chicken crate's not on a Model A, but that's a Model A on the left... check out the patched tube on the ground.)

I heard once that roadside repairs included:

Steel cans cut to replace blown babbits?

Dried corn husks packed into tire/wheel when the inner tube couldn't be patched?

Non-urban legend?

Built during difficult times for sure. Being fairly close to the worst of the Dust Bowl all of my Grandparents had a lot of storeis to tell about those times. It would likely take me about an hour to compose a post with all four of their stories. I can tell you that the stories are adventurious to hearbreaking depending on how they viewed their struggles.
