Default Flathead engine parts ?

I am ready to order parts for my 1953 Mercury / Ford Flathead engine. Who has the best product to buy from is it Speedway / Mac's antique auto parts or are all of them the same. I need pistons and rings all new intake and exhaust valves with keepers springs and valve guides. Main and rod bearings etc....Engine gasket kit. I appreciate your feedback as well as your experience buying from them.

Thank You
Frenchy

Speedway sells Egge pistons for less than what you can buy them from Egge.

Egge might have good product but THERE CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS SUCK. I WOULD SHOOT MYSELF BEFORE EVER BUYING FROM THEM AGAIN. Try James at JOBLOT. Nice guy, knows his stuff and great pricing.

Speedway and Macs have been great for me. Take care with Egge pistons though; I, and a number of others, have had issues with them hitting the heads - it appears the dome profile isn't right.

Just a reminder, order the merc pistons if you are using the 4" crank, Ford pistons don't work. Good luck

VanPelt Sales , Speedway, Joblot, Dennis Carpenter, Bob Drake, Egge, Patrick's, C&G, Dick Spadaro, MAC's, Joe's Antique Auto parts, Early Ford V8 Sales, Red's Headers, Ross...have all been good places for me to deal with. Sometimes you need to read the small print in there catalogs to make sure you know what you are getting and what country it is coming from. I had a few not so happy experiences with some of these companies but overall mostly good memories. Just make sure you know exactly what you want and need when you place the order. Some of these companies have good tech support that will really help you out, while others are just order takers and do not know diddly squat about the products they are selling. I have caught Speedway during some of their free shipping sales and saved mucho $$'s on some big/heavy orders.

It seems some people have had problems with EGGE pistons hitting the head. That engine i just finished a couple of week ago. 3-5/16 +4in. EGGE pistons. Offy 9.1 heads, I layed the heads on with no gasket, turned engine over, didn't hit, installed gasket, snugged it down with clay, had .070 over pistons. the only time I've had trouble with pistons hitting is with stock EAB heads that had been milled, You cain't blame the pistons if the heads have been milled to much. I've had the same experience as 49r with regard to pistons hitting the head. . . . except it was using Ross pistons. May have been a decking issue but I don't know for sure. Be sure you know all the details of your engine before ordering anything. Good luck!

Mac, I'm sorry I somehow missed you on that list! If I had been thinking correctly, you would have been one of the first on that list. I have had nothing but positive experiences with anything purchase from Van Pelt Sales. Not to mention the personal great tech support I received form Mac while assembling later gears in an early transmission case BEFORE his book was published. The last item I bought from Mac was an early NOS press on aluminum timing gear at a good price when it seemed like it was going to be impossible to find one. That exact gear now has 10k miles on it where the foreign made fiber gear, that was put on there by the engine builder, lasted less than 1k miles before failing with most teeth worn out.

Failing to mention Mac on my list could have also been avoided IF we could ever get the supplier listing put back up here on the NEW FORDBARN exactly like we had available on the old Fordbarn.

Mac, I am wondering if we could possibly get Shelly to bring that supplier/vendor listing like we had on the old FB over on the Chevy Barn or maybe start a new listing there that we could refer folks to? Just a thought.

Walt, did you take 25 off the heads to get the tight chamber. I think Ross makes the best racing pistons for a reasonable price. Unfortunately they are not street pistons and must be fit with larger clearances. I have several sets runing on the street and so far so good, we'll see how long the rings last. Both engines were broke in with a load. Don't fit them too tight, when the engine gets hot they can seeze.

It would be great to have a list of vendors that contribute so much to us all.
This would give us a better feeling when we buy something.

To the Moderators: Why not list (and enlist) a bunch of vendors and get us some discounts like you do on the HAMB?

Ron, on the engine I just posted above, The pistons are EGGE 4 ring bought from Patrick's 3=5/16 4in. Merc crank, the heads are new Offy 400, bought from Speedway. the block has never been decked. .070 piston clearance with BEST gasket, not copper. Walt
