convert it to 409A, it's less expensive and available. R12 is liguid gold. R22 is already being phased out.

Liquid gold (R-12) is always legal. It's just the price that's the killer.

Anything is legal to sell until you get caught. I don't know. I've been selling it for a while now by advertising on CL and no issues so far. I bought out a few stores by the cases when R12 was being fased out. Now I just sell each can for about $25. I also had the larger containers, but I used them up and sold the rest.

A lot of older car people (70s and 80s) vehicles still buy them if the system wasn't converted. A few of the older hot rods with a/c's buy them. There's still a market for them.

In my opinion, R12 systems work better than R134 systems.

I have found that in my daily driving cars that the conversion to 134 from 12 leaks less than the system did on 12, i think the mixture of pag oil and in old mineral oils minimizes the hose leaks, have been doing the conversion since 1995 and still see a lot of cars that I did then, less problems with corrosion internally too
I still have r12 in stock, found a 30 pounder on the side of the road 3/4 full. next day found a 30 of r22 on the same road,

R12 and R134 both work but there are changes to be made when changing the gas type its not a case of drop and swap they behave differently and must be treated accordingly To get good results you cant cut corners [it will bite you down the track] also there are now several hydrocarbon refrigerant's available and they also work quite well when changed over correctly Time to do some homework

Man, you's guys passing-out FREE advice about how legal all of this is need to get your facts straight. This has nothing to do with State Laws ..... this all falls under Federal EPA guidelines. Back in my day, I had to have training and a license even to touch the stuff, including SOME A/C service equipment. Understand that to make an example out of someone, fines of up to $25K (per day) are common place.

"The sales restriction is established by EPA regulations (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. Only EPA-certified technicians are allowed to purchase ozone-depleting substances (ODS) or non-ozone depleting substitutes used as refrigerants, with limited exceptions. Refrigerant can only be sold to technicians certified under the Section 608 or Section 609 technician certification programs, where individuals may only purchase refrigerant consistent with the appliances covered by their certification."

Systems using R12 are/were more efficient than those using R134A. Back in the day when R134A was being introduced, there were at lot of unknowns and opinions about changing systems (automotive) to R134A. In the end it was recognized that all the components could be reused especially the hoses as a “barrier” had formed on the inside of them. Of course, compressor oil had to be changed along with a new filter/drier, and a slight reduction in refrigerant weight/system charge IIRC. Also, at the time it became law (in Canada) that you required a refrigerant technician licence to open, evacuate, and charge automotive systems , and anytime one of the systems had been serviced, a sticker was required denoting date, system charge, etc. You also were not allowed to just “top up” a leaking system, but instead had to evacuate and recycle the refrigerant, find the leak, and fix it. Makes sense really, but lots of folks just “top it up” anyways. What I found interesting at the time while installing some of our rotary vane AC compressors on NYC subway cars which used R22, is that they (NYC Transit) had an exemption, so they could still use R22. They also had lots of refrigerant leaks, and would “top up” systems daily. Was a total joke. Was also told, since refrigerants like R12/22 were excellent degreasers, they were still allowed to use them in the Petro-chemical industry to clean out the massive oil/fuel storage tanks. Lol!

I agree with V8 COOPMAN, I also had to have a lic. to buy R12 and 134 refrigerant when I was still working. now that I am retired, my vehicles that have A/C go to a shop. I let someone else to the A/C work
