Default Model A's in new 'Bonnie & Clyde' film

Hollywood films continue to keep our iconic Model A alive and well, and in front of today's public. The original block-buster film 'Bonnie & Clyde', seen by millions of movie-goers in 1967 show-cased lots of Model A's.

About to be released, is a new version of that story of Depression-era 'Barrow Gang' of bank robbers. And this time too, a goodly sampling of Ford Model A's play a significant role in the film.

This new version of the story is a four-hour drama that has a stronger focus on historical accuracy. It stars Holliday Grainger and Emile Hirsch, William Hurt and Holly Hunter. The movie should start to be shown on Sunday, December 8th at 9 PM on stations, A&E, History Channel, and Lifetime.

For those of you who subscribe to DISH satellite programming, the new December cover of the DISH Progaming Guide features "Bonnie" on the front cover, with a one page article (page 16) about the new mini-series. In it, the article states that this new version will offer "a more complete portrait of America's most famous outlaw lovers" . . . "Taking a much gritter and somber approach . . ."

But, while the story line may be a bit more authentic, don't expect the "Hollywood" prop. men to be better in getting more accurate cars. Historic accuracy in details of props has been notoriously weak in movies, and I expect it to continue to be so. Apparently, "Going the extra mile" for prop. accuracy does not seem to be appreciated enough to justify the effort.

For those who want to see our Fords in 'Action', this movie will prove that Henry's Lady, is more than just another 'pretty face'.

Watching this show should give those with a sharp eye for historical detail regarding the Model A, an opportunity to play a game, called : "Spot something wrong". Forgetting other prop errors, we want to just concentrate on the Ford Model A's. Items such as - a '28''29 Stone-guard (which did not exist until 1970 or so) on the radiator of a '29 car, single-sided white wall tires, etc. Remembering that the film depicts the mid-thirties time period, when lots of owner modification have already taken place and hence, would not be 'period' wrong. So, while it might be wrong to see a Stone-Guard on the radiator of a '29 car, in 1934 one might easily have found Model A's with V-8 wheels. However, how many 2nd tail lights will we see ? This should be FUN !

There is even room for TWO games ! One game could be finding those items that are wrong from any perspective (i.e. '31 Ford on the outside, '36 Dodge dash on the inside - I have seen that done in a movie ! ). Another game could be finding those 'Model A' things that would NOT have been done or available to a Model A in 1934.

Set it up last night to be recorded (on two separate DVRs, set to different stations - just in case something goes wrong)...

It will be interesting to see if they use accurate depression era looking "A's" or super clean and polished modern day "A's"! The original Bonny & Clyde with Warren Beatty used a variety of era correct cars and not just "A's". I also hope they portray Bonny & Clyde as the murdering scum
that they were in real life. An example are the two Texas motorcycle
troopers they gunned down in cold blood. One final note: Bonny & Clyde never used Thompson submachine guns like Warren Beatty and Fay
Dunaway did in their version. Clyde preferred .30 cal. BAR's (Browning Automatic Rifle) of WWI fame. Frank Hammer (correct name ?) the Texas
lawman who hunted them down also preferred the BAR. Thompsons with
their .45 cal. pistol bullets did not have the penetrating power of the BAR.

It'll be interesting to see what gun Hamer uses in the film. I had read he carried a Remington Model 8.

Look for Model As with

White wall tires
Motometers
Stone guards
Non black wheels
Dual sidemounts
Rubber tire stems

keep in mind.......this is still Hollywood and not an attempt at a step by step historical account.

you are going to find lots of inaccuracies..........

Thumbs down Re: Model A's in new 'Bonnie & Clyde' film

In the pics the girl looks a little like Bonny, but the guy does not look like Clyde at all. The "A's" in the pic just don't have the right look to me for being 1934ish. I have seen very few modern made movies of the 20's or 30's were they get the cars right. One of the reasons is they just use to many "A's" and "T's". I guess they use what they can find, however... One of the main reasons, if not the main reason, I like to watch TCM. Is that all the old cars are not old and they are in their natural habitat.
You don't always see many "A's" or "T's" and some times none at all.
But you do get to see some mighty cool cars. Especially the real classics
like Packards, Lincolns, Cadillacs, etc.

Note: Bonnie and Clyde is a two part movie, so set your recorders to get both parts. Afordman31

Yes, A fun game. What are the "parts" on the rag next to "Clyde" in the photo of the '34 sedan? I can't seem to make them out as engine parts. That car would have been fairly new since the infamous pair met their doom in May of '34.

I hope the V8 guys are playing the wrong parts game too. Should be interesting. I've always thought that the studios should hire a knowledgeable consultant to get the cars right. They need a gun guy too for westerns and war movies.

Didn't even get past the bang bang song. '29 Tudor with cowl lights. One of my personal fave's. '36 tow truck in '34?? And of course center head water outlets with crinkly water hoses in '34?
