Default Flathead Ford head studs- a couple questions

I am building a 59AB right now and I need head studs for it. I am running a set of Sharp heads. They are old block letter heads and are pretty cool. They measure 2" thick exactly. The stud goes into the block 1/2", and the nut is 1/2". Save room for the washer and it looks like I need a stud 3 1/8-3 1/4". Most places that sell flathead stuff list their studs at an even 3". So here are my questions:

1. Does anyone know a company that has studs to my specs?

2. I have head that Ford stud threads are rolled, not cut. I have heard guys run a regular stud and they cannot get them to stop leaking because the of the thread differences. Can anyone vouch for that? I can get a Dorman stud at work pretty cheap, but affraid of what I just said

I called H&H and Mike Herman is checking to see if he has any studs, but I have not heard back from him yet. He said the early 21 studs were pretty long.

I can get studs from ARP, But they run around 250.00!! Just trying to see if anyone out there found anything better/cheaper?

Thanks guys

According to my info, here are your options using Ford part numbered studs;
48-6067 3.09" long
91A-6067 3.15" long
B-6066 3.5" long
40-6067 3.59" long

Looks like the 91A pieces could be closest. Brian

Good post Chris. I'm interested in seeing the answers.

One question I have though is that what are thoughts on using bolts, like the 49-53 flatheads? Is there a reason to not use bolts, and say some acorn covers or something? Not trying to throw a wrench in what your asking for...

Go to Mac's Antique Auto Parts site and order Pt.# 48-6067. These have an overall length of 3.2 inches.

Thanks everyone! Has anyone heard the "rolled" threads vs. "cut" thread theory?

I was actually just looking at Speedway generator offset brackets and saw them mentioning longer studs for that bracket, so something out there exists. It didn't say how long those studs are though. and it would be $160 to order 16 kits of that.

Head Stud Kit for Generator Bracket
Price: $9.99 EA
Item #:

Yes, someone just mentioned that! I can get the short studs here in town at Antique Auto Ranch. They want 1.15 each, but no waiting or shipping. So may go that route!!

I used bolts when I fitted the Meyer heads to my 21 stud.
I broke 4 studs off each side getting them out and decided I wouldn't go through that pain again
I certainly noticed a difference in the threads. The original studs did have a more rolled edge at the tops of the threads compared to sharper ones on the bolts. They also felt like a slightly better fit in the block when screwed in versus the bolts.
I used sealer round the bolt threads and haven't have any leakage issues even though the 8 studs that broke had to be drilled and the threads cleaned which left the bolts feeling quite loose when screwed in.

Rolled threads are about 25 to 30% stronger than cut threads. The thread pitch diameter is what determines how snug they fit in a threaded hole. The pitch diameter is generally slightly larger on rolled threads, but there are tolerances things are made to. If you really want to read up on threads I suggest the Machinerys Handbook it is the source for all manufacturing information.

Hey guys, a fella on the Hamb mentioned this

"i was at roy's (nacewicz) place last wednesday, for studs for my brothers flattie. new batch was at heat treat and would be ready this week. i buy bolts all the time from roy, they look better than hardward store crap and i dont think prices are bad for what you get. its the closest to NOS you will get. his number is 734-654-9450."

I called and his product sounds outstanding. He makes all kinds of correct fasteners for older Fords. Yes, his studs have rolled threads. I got a set of studs, washers and nuts coming, and he was not very much more money then Chinese junk!!!
