carburetor problems
Hi, my 41 Merc original carburetor goes dry in the bowl after a few days, and makes it hard to start without priming. Would a new Stromberg carburetor be the answer over trying to rebuild the old one? Any suggestions?

Re: carburetor problems
Where is the gasoline going? It shouldn't evaporate that fast. If you are having to crank a lot to get gas to the carb you might have a fuel line connection (loose) that is allowing air to let the fuel to siphon back into the tank. If your carb is not leaking from the bowl a new one won't change things. Check that the fuel pump is working properly.

Re: carburetor problems
Maybe a leak either at the jet plugs on the front of the lower body or the power valve. If the power valve is "original" or of non modern materials it could be the culprit.

Re: carburetor problems
I pulled the top of the carb off and the bowl was dry. I put gas in the bowl, and put the top back on and it started and runs fine. But if I set it up for a few days the bowl drys out again. I assume the power valve is that part screwed into the bottom of the bowl, and it definitely is old.

Re: carburetor problems
Take the carb off. Make a little stand using three long bolts and nuts so you can see the bottom of the carb without picking it up. Remove the top of the carb and fill the bowl with fuel, if it is leaking out the bottom you should see it.

Re: carburetor problems
Even with the current gasohol you should start easy for about a week. The most likely culprit is the power valve or it's gasket. The ones that come in the kits don't fit properly without rework at the base of the threads. You can get the reworked PVs from KenCT on here. Iv'e replaced the fiber gasket with a nylon one. No leaks.

Re: carburetor problems
Max The new Stromberg you sold to the guy with the 34 solved his problem of several years and he is a happy camper now. I understand you rebuilt his old one for a spare. That makes good sense for tours. He said he sent you pictures of his spark plugs and you zeroed in on the problem. G.M.
