Default Fan Hub

Hello, I'm new to the forum been reading it for awhile and gained lots of useful info. My question is how much oil to fill a 46' fan Hub. I can't seem to find anywhere what the capacitiy is.

Thanks,
Dan

1. Point the oil hole UP, put in some oil.
2. Point hole DOWN, catch oil coming out til dripping stops, put plug back in. If nothing comes out, repeat from top of this list...

Hole has a dam around it meant to retain correct amount.

Ford's recommended amount for step one is one ounce, obviously not terribly important as a specific in this process.

Also Ford changed the recommended lub from motor oil to a heavier EP lube. This never got changed in Ford owners manuals. Tom

Hi Tom, A friend of ours that bought a 46 coupe you dirrected him to drove it a while and took it 20 miles away to have some paint work done. He called and said it was making a lot of noise so I rode up with him to look at it. The fan bearing was really screeming. I put the plug on the top and put some light gear oil in and it quieted dow. He has put several thousand miles on it and went on a few tours and it still sounds good. Jack just sold the 39 and bought a 47 wagon also. G.M.

I filled one not too long ago and it seems that it took about 2 ounces. Use 80-90W range gear lube. The procedure Bruce described is the correct way to fill them. It also predetermines the right amount of lube. Don't forget to check these oil-filled fan hubs each time you change your oil! We sell the internal shaft and the support bearing for it all the time because people forget that they need oil.
