Default Step Plates

Is there a specific place on the running boards for the step plates to mount. Or do you just pick out the spot you would step on getting in and out of the car. Might sound like a dumb question, but I thought I would ask before I drill any holes.

Leave them off until the running board rubber starts to wear and then place them there.
