after market electric windshield wiper
I've been looking at electric windshield wiper motors in various catalogs. The catalogs state that the motor will interfear with the windshield opening outward. My thoughts were to mount the motor on the inside on the header board above the windshield and use a longer arm on the wiper side. Question, would this work? Has anyone else done it this way? I really like being able to open the windshield. Any thoughts? Joe

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
when I got the woodie the wiper was done as you suggest. The guy had drilled through the wooden header and the sheet metal outer cap and used a longer arm on an electric motor. It worked. (I took it off and repaired the holes and installed a good vacuum motor, which still stalls on hills, but that's a Model A.)

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
I have an aftermarket wiper motor installed in the stock location outside on the windshield. I can still open the windshield two inches, which is pretty much all you need to get the air conditioner working. Dad and I have been pondering an inside mounted electric for his 29' Tudor, and I believe he'll go the same way I have on the coupe. I found this picture of another car with what looks like original motor, and you can see how much clearance is left the the visor.

Thanks for the picture. I was wondeing why the motor is mounted on the frame. The only thing I can think of so it looks original.

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
My Tudor has a newer electric wiper mounted on the inside, with the shaft through the header. It has a plastic motor housing with a switch. Shaft was just long enough to reach through to the outside, and the windshield opens as far as ever. I can't vouch for the durability of this type of wiper, because I haven't had to use it much.

Can you post a picture of your setup with the electric wiper? Dick |

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
When I got my 29 Fordor it also had an electric aftermarket wiper motor on the inside. The shaft went through the header above the hinge. I also could open the windshield as far as I desired. The wider arm is hinged at the motor allowing this.

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
These guys seem to know what's up with wipers. Theirs will allow the window to swing out normally. They sent me pictures of the unit installed and it looks really neat. Mounts on the inside above the window.

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
That would be a good link to add to the master list -(but I'm not sure how to do it.)

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
The picture with the wiper mounted on the outside is NOT an original "A" wiper motor..

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
Here are a couple of photos of what's on my car. Note the electrical tape covering the original holes in the windsheild frame. Temp is 3 below, so any draft is a problem.

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
Fred, my all original 29 coupe has that same wiper you say is not stock. It is made by EA Laboratories. An expert told me it was an original accessory because my firewall still has the hole blocked off where the vacuum line would come through.

Vanspeed, Fred was correct saying it is not orginal Ford eq. I also have the EA lab motor like you and it is an aftermarket accessory. Under that black paint is an easy to polish aluminum cover that look quite sharp when finished. I have mine wired to a well hidden micro swith in the header panel. The only fun I had was altering a wiper blade to fit the shaft and be of a close length to original. Some day if I win the lottery I be looking for the original Owen-Dyneto Closed Car (OD-C1A and OD-C1B) |

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
When I replaced my Tudor windshield frame lo these many years ago, I never got around to drilling it for the wiper motor and started using Rain-X. And that stuff works so well that I've never felt the need to install a wiper motor. Keeps the whole windshield clear during a rain, not just a little streaky area in front of the driver.

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
I agree with gilitos, wiper motors are just for looks. I first tried Rain-X about 10 years ago and it works great.

Re: after market electric windshield wiper
Was the E A lab unit dealer installed? Some guys in a local A club looked at mine and a few thought it was original to the car.
