Extra steering column support
I'm planning to install that steering column support on my 1930 roadster.
I see the heads of the 2 bolts under the dash (view attached). Are there nuts on the other side of those bolts or is there a welded "nut" behind that bolt? In other words, do I have to remove that dash panel or can I just unscrew the bolts. Thanks Leo |

Re: Extra steering column support
My roadster had the gas tank mount for the steering column. I replaced it with the later dash mounted and I had to remove the dash panel, dril a couple of holes in some bar stock to match some hole that existed, then drill some in the bar stock to hold the bracket after it was bolted securely in place. I took the mount at the bottom of the tank apart and left it on the tank but not hooked up to the column, thus no pulling on that bracket and fatiguing the tank metal where it is connected which may have caused a leak.

Re: Extra steering column support - Gas tank leak repair
As Y block said above this is for 28 - 29 cars.
This method allows the installation without making holes in the car. I left the upper half of bracket on the tank in case someone wants to return the mount to original ... Some folks cut the bracket off. Looks better to me to leave bracket in place and leave out the rubber "strap" between the column and the bracket. FYI. There are two version of the 31 mounting bracket. 1. One for left hand drive available from vendors.. 2. One for right hand drive. I do not know if anyone makes a repro of the RHD unit... I saved this from Old Ford Barn that someone posted from years ago ... It worked very well for me when I did it a number of years ago. Last edited by Benson; 12-26-2017 at 08:51 AM. |

Re: Extra steering column support
Again, Benson is also showing a '28-29. The 30-31 bolt up without the extra piece of metal.

Re: Extra steering column support
I left the bottom clamp, the original, in place but don't put the bottom half with the rubber in it. I put this on to prevent any strain on the tank so I don't want it still attached to the column in any way because it may get tweeked when getting in and out, when braking or spinning my wheels to show off.

Benson, thank you for the pictures that shows exactly how to install the bracket. What a difference that makes in explaining the job.

Re: Extra steering column support
An added benefit that I found is the column being much more solid lessens the strain on the steering box mount bolts. Observe them both before and after support installation - may want to replace them, I did and the steering is much tighter. To me this an improvement as much as getting off the tank.

Re: Extra steering column support
There are 2 hidden screws behind the dash, one on each side on the cowl sides. Jeff

Re: Extra steering column support
Try first without removing the dash panel. I did mine ('31 Roadster) without removing the dash. Russ
