Default Extra steering column support

I'm planning to install that steering column support on my 1930 roadster.
I see the heads of the 2 bolts under the dash (view attached). Are there nuts on the other side of those bolts or is there a welded "nut" behind that bolt? In other words, do I have to remove that dash panel or can I just unscrew the bolts.

Thanks
Leo

My roadster had the gas tank mount for the steering column. I replaced it with the later dash mounted and I had to remove the dash panel, dril a couple of holes in some bar stock to match some hole that existed, then drill some in the bar stock to hold the bracket after it was bolted securely in place. I took the mount at the bottom of the tank apart and left it on the tank but not hooked up to the column, thus no pulling on that bracket and fatiguing the tank metal where it is connected which may have caused a leak.

Davey, it sounds like you are describing the mounting on a '28-29. The '30-31 are different and don't need the extra piece of bar stock as the holes line up without it to existing holes.

Leo, yes there is a nut and bolt and I believe you need to remove the dash rail on the roadster. I use the original mount to mount my water temperature gauge.

As Y block said above this is for 28 - 29 cars.

This method allows the installation without making holes in the car.

I left the upper half of bracket on the tank in case someone wants to return the mount to original ... Some folks cut the bracket off.

Looks better to me to leave bracket in place and leave out the rubber "strap" between the column and the bracket.

FYI. There are two version of the 31 mounting bracket.

1. One for left hand drive available from vendors..

2. One for right hand drive. I do not know if anyone makes a repro of the RHD unit...

I saved this from Old Ford Barn that someone posted from years ago ...

It worked very well for me when I did it a number of years ago.

Again, Benson is also showing a '28-29. The 30-31 bolt up without the extra piece of metal.

Remove the dash panel. Unscrew the two bolts in front of the steering wheel. The bracket fits right on those bolts on the 1930 and 31 models. Put the nuts back on and tighten. Replace the dash panel. put the anti rattle rubber in place and attached the column clamp with the two screws. DONE!

It was about a five minute operation on my 31 Tudor.

I left the bottom clamp, the original, in place but don't put the bottom half with the rubber in it. I put this on to prevent any strain on the tank so I don't want it still attached to the column in any way because it may get tweeked when getting in and out, when braking or spinning my wheels to show off.

Y-block, you are correct. Mine is a 1929. Sorry, misread the post.

No problem, they all benefit from the upgrade.

Benson, thank you for the pictures that shows exactly how to install the bracket. What a difference that makes in explaining the job.

An added benefit that I found is the column being much more solid lessens the strain on the steering box mount bolts. Observe them both before and after support installation - may want to replace them, I did and the steering is much tighter. To me this an improvement as much as getting off the tank.

There are 2 hidden screws behind the dash, one on each side on the cowl sides. Jeff

Try first without removing the dash panel. I did mine ('31 Roadster) without removing the dash. Russ
