Default Eddelbrock question

Hello to any one reading this post I'm looking for some info on what other people have tried and what seems to be the best setting, I have a new Eddelbrock 1404 4 barrel carb on an offenhouser intake for my 8 ba that's going in my 51 f1 the carb I've been informed needs to have metering rods and maybe even jets changed I have the kit with all the goodies but I'm not sure on the chart where I really should be,leaner is what I've been informed is better because stock is to rich the number 11 setting on the chart says 2 stages leaner I'm no hoodoo so any info would be greatly appreciated I'm using a Bubas dist with only mechanical advance and the motor is pretty much stock, thanks I welcome any advice. Alec

Don't forget the stock dist can't be used with this carb. You might try #8 jet set, but an AF meter is the key to success. And the Vac. adv is the key to economy. Be interested on what you find becaust I'm not sure how this system works on a stock engine.

I have the same setup on a stock '51 Merc.
The Bubba's distributor should work but one with vac. advance would be a little better.
For your reference I am using setup #7 (metering rod only with stock jet) which with AF meter works well. (yours may or may not be the same)
Did try #11 (small jet with original rod) and it was too lean.
The #8 metering rod is not included with the rod and jet kit.

Did you get your jet kit yet Alec? I'll be glad to come over and give you a hand with it. Are you putting your truck in the car show this weekend?
I'm still needing T stats for mine, don't think I'll be at the show.

I used the .083 jets and the metering rods that came with the carb. I have a mild cam, but otherwise set up is pretty much the same as yours (bubba's distributor). I'm using an Edelbrock intake. Seems to be working well for me.

Sometimes, seems to be working well is just that. Maybe if it was tuned right, it might be running great and getting good gas mileage as well

Ol'Ron, for your information the #8 setting (which is rod only) is identical to the #7 setting except that it allows a richer mixture at low vacuum (foot in it, power on)

Ol'Ron is dead on. A/F meter is the way to go....
Had nothing but trouble with my 390 Holley so I switched to a 1403. It was still rich so I ordered a kit, had to jet down and change the rods, but now things are fine. I'm not good enough to read plugs so the meter worked for me..
Just my 2¢..

While Richard was running these tests, he made a rod to improve either power or economy. One thing you have to remember his engine had an L-100 and 8.5 CR. So the distributor advance curve is critical. The key here is to tune for econmy, then power.
