Default Steering Box for 1940

Can the lower seal be replaced without removing box from car?

I think you can, the pinion shaft will come out thru the top, to get the old seal out.
Try not to disturb the steering shaft - four bolts on the end- the end play will be hard to re set if you damage the gaskets. You'll have to be very careful adjusting the screw for the pinion end play, real easy to over tighten it.

You can if you have patience.

I'd done this by turning two sheet metal screws into the seal at 180° from one another.
Pull each screw down a bit, working one and then the other. The seal will "walk" down the gear box body.
Installing is easy. Piece of tube and tap, tap, tap.
