Correct A belt size.

I decided to replace the belt on my 29 Tudor and save the old one as a spare. Ordered one Snyder's that is a A-8620 and put it on and tensioned. It appears too long as it allows the belt at the generator pulley to touch the lower radiator hose rubber part. My old belt was a 5L430, which measures as a 5/8" width 43" long. Measured all three pulleys against the spares I have and they're identical. Went to our local farm store and got a fractional horsepower 5L430 belt and it fits perfectly. Belt is about an inch off the lower radiator hose and the slotted accessory bracket off the timing cover is about halfway in it's slot. It was topped out with the Snyder belt. .

Cogged belts are flat, not V.

I think the correct term is "notched V-belt". I use a BX42 also and it works great.

EDIT - my belt is BX40, not BX42. I tried the BX42 and it was too long. I think the BX42 would work but it's how you orient the intermediate bracket. (I have an alternator, and the pulley is smaller than the pulley for the generator).

So in summary, how is it Snyder's is selling a belt 1" longer than I need, and 2" longer than a BX42?

Ramman, I have snyders A8620 belt on my 31 coupe with original generator and have 3/4 in. clearence between the generator pulley and radiator hose.

I'm thinking that I read that the pulley on an alternator is smaller than a generator pulley. Others will chime in???

All three of my pulleys are the stock size.

What you are referring to as a cogged belt is known as a timing belt in the machine and automation world. They are used to drive pulleys that have matching teeth spacings and provide a positive non-slip connection for precision rotation and location.

I have been following this thread for a couple of days. Snyders as well as other venders have been selling fan belts for decades. Many many belts have gone out the door to satisfied customers. Maybe the belt that you have is correct size, but the car you are putting it on has a modification that is unknown. As a small parts vender, I would want a customer to contact me within any problem. Maybe a call to Don Snyder would be the proper thing to do, especially if the belt is truly the wrong size.

Jack, The cogged belts mentioned earlier have original cross section with slits for flexibility but still having the same side grip. These don't use teeth.
As you say, the very thin timing belts have a positive tooth engagement. Using these belts would save energy.

B-41 ,,the belt is stretched out from being 20 years old and the adjuster is maxed out, NAPA brand belt
