spare won't fit in fender well.
I know this has been covered before so excuse me for bringing it up again. I can't seem to get my spare in the fender well. I have lowered the pressure to 20 pounds and don't want to go lower. It is a universal brand tire 4.75/5.00 19". I just had the fenders painted so I don't want to force it in the well. Is there a thinner 19" tire brand. I know Firestone and Goodyears are pretty wide. I have a 31 deluxe roadster. I had the same problem with a 30 pickup I restored so I did the Polish spare (I can say that cause I'm polish and proud of it.) I used the rim and put a inner tube on it with a tire cover and you couldn't even tell there was no tire there. Then I had my real spare in the bed of the truck. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks

When I ran sixteens on my '31 RDPU I never did put air in the spare, just carrried a pump.

This may be a silly question, but shouldn't your car have 21 inch tires? If so, those tires are thinner than the 19s.

The 19" should work fine if they are goodyear 4.50 and not 4.50/4.75. Lucas just came out with 21" tires and I believe they are 4.50 tires in goodyear diamond tread so I am heading to buy some of those as they will look right and fit in the well. good luck, Ken |

I am sorry I missed the point as I should have also repilied that he Lucas 19" Goodyear tire is also 4.50 and the right size for the Model A well.
Sorry, Ken |

Re: spare won't fit in fender well.
I have the GOODYEAR 4.75 19 "BLACKWALLS" and they fit fine. Question, orginial fender/well or repro? As said before Firestone is 4.75 5.00 19 made for station wagon .

Re: spare won't fit in fender well.
from my original post, my fenders are original and so is the well. just doesn't fit and is way to tight. maybe the sides are a little pushed in but don't really see it. guess i'll try and find a thinner tire or do what some of the guys said and just carry a tire pump which would be ok

Re: spare won't fit in fender well.
Many of the reproduction tires in both sizes have a profile that is larger than the original tires. The new Goodyear tires fit very well. For other tires such as the 21 inch Firestone there is a trick (not my idea) that will allow a properly inflated tire to fit into the wells. If you modify the studs that are installed in the triangular mounting plate so that the studs can be removed when you take the lug nuts off, the tire will come out. It works well in my '29 Town Sedan with 21 inch Firestones. Gar Williams
