Default Most-asked question about your Model A?

A comment in the overdrive thread got me wondering: He said that the single most asked question he gets is, "Is it all original?"

For me, I think it's, "How fast will it go?"

Any others?

There's always the usual: How fast will it go? What kind of mileage do you get? etc.

The best comment I have frequently heard at gas stations is, "What year is that car and what color is that paint?" Once I tell them it's a Kewanee Green 1930 Model A Ford Tudor Sedan, they say, "Yeah, my granddad had one exactly like this except it was a red 1950 Buick station wagon . . . just like yours!"

I stopped for a cup of coffee one Saturday morning at McDonalds and a lady walked up to me as I was getting out of the Model A and asked, "How old is that car?" I replied, "Eighty-three" and she yelled at her husband, "Delbert! Get the camera, this car was built in 1883!"

On that same stop at Mickey D's, when I came out of the restaurant I discovered that the car wouldn't start so I opened the hood to check the fuse; a man walks up and starts talking to me while looking over my shoulder into the engine compartment and complimented me on the restoration and then remarked, "Did you do the work on this car yourself?" I replied, yes and he said, "You can sure smell that fresh paint!" I just smiled knowing that I had painted the car in 1972 (41 years ago).

Last comment - why is it so many people (particularly teenagers) seem to always ask, "What's it worth?" or "What'd you have to pay for that thing?" I have tried to be diplomatic and not shoot back with, "That's sorta personal, what did you have to pay for that pair of shoes?" Rather thought it was best just tell them, "I paid $750 for it." I then pause and add . . . "41 years ago."

Not a Question - But have you heard ... My (insert relationship hear) had one just like it. After a few questions, sometimes it turns out that it might have been a "Model A." Like the one that had a radiator shell emblem that said RIO with wings (probably a RIO Flying Cloud). I always listen because they are so excited, and they want to tell you all about person and the car. Good stories. Bill

When are you going to chop it?
How much for just the body?

Both questions really burn my butt as I have not intentions of chopping it and if I ever dicided to sell it, it would be with everything and not to anyone that was going to streetrod it. Rod

Did you buy it new?
Where did you find it?

Some funny ones I've received.

(Before a tour, getting coffee at a Burger King Drive Through)
WINDOW PERSON: Does it run???
ME: Uh, Yeah. I drove it here
WINDOW PERSON: Wow. That's cool.

(Brought the car to show the Automotive Technical College Students)

STUDENT: Hey man. You should put a GRILL on it!
ME: What?
STUDENT: Put a GRILLLL on it!!
ME: It has a grill on it.
STUDENT: I mean put a GRRRIILLLLL on it.
ME: Like a BBQ grill?
STUDENT: Awe... Nevermind.

(Still don't understand that one.)

Always strikes me as odd that the last question is usually, "What is it?"

Had a delightful conversation with an elderly lady at the market one day. She was all excited, knew it was a Model A, knew it was a Roadster and asked if I was going to be there awhile so she could go get her husband. A few minutes later she shows up with this gentleman in tow and asks him if its the same car he had when they met. He looked it all over and said, "...could be, same color and year, but mine didn't have sidemounts on it." Then he leaned over and said, "...you know, I had to sell that car to buy her wedding ring, still not sure who got the best part of that deal..." She slugged him and they both walked off arm in arm laughing.

That's what its all about.

"You don't actually drive it, Do You?" (Miles from home)
You don't drive it in the rain, Do You? (I live in a rain forest)
"Where did you get it?" (I usually reply "From Ford")
How Much? (This one always sets my hair on fire, and I don't know why)
Does it run? (in a parking lot, anywhere)
You can't actually drive it on the road can you?

Hi, this is Martin in Ohio.

With regard to frequently asked questions, I hear:

*"How long have you had it?" Answer: 10 years
*"Did you restore it?" Answer: No, but I am working on it and making
changes all the time.

On the other hand, I ask questions to fellow Model A and T owners:

*Who can do cad plating in the area?
*Who is the best painter?
*Does anyone have a stash of parts?
*Various mechanical questions and fix-it questions

Of interest, our local club is the "Country Roads T & A Club" I will leave it to your active imaginations to figure what else that could mean.

But really, it's all about the cars!!! Hahaha.

Regards,

Martin in Appalachian Washington County - we are all cousins.

I had a elderly gentleman showing off his knowledge with a group of people around the car- telling me-
It was a Model T not an A
All cars back then were only painted black and had wooden Rims.

i told him it was a Model A and they were the original rims and not all Model A cars were black

To which he got very loud saying he knows cause he had one and I'm lying and I don't know anything about the car and shouldn't be driving it.

I never understood why the price or value should be a secret. I always tell what I paid if asked, and tell them what I think it's worth if they ask. I figure it's part part of the person doing research on the car. Maybe they are wondering if it's something they could afford to buy? I don't see it as any different than going to a used car lot and asking the price for a used car.

First question, does it run? answer Deb pushed and I steered. Second question Where did you get it? answer , I found it down by the creek. What is it worth? That one usually irritates me the most!! It use to be, did I want to sell it? Sometimes the answer would be Do you see a for sale sign?

Well, I've had mine for just over a year now - but the most common questions I've seen are:

- what year is it?
- is that a Model T?
- did you restore it yourself? (no - the previous owner did)
- can I take a picture of it? (of course!)
- how much does one of those cost? (almost always from guys - I figure they're maybe thinking of getting one)

My wife and I took a couple of our friends to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn MI in my Tudor this past fall. I parket it in the lot and we all went in. The wife decided that she wanted her jacket that was in the car, so back out to the lot I went.

As I aproached my car parked in the midst of all the jellybean sedans in the lot I noticed two men standing by it conversing.

I arrived just in time to hear one of them say how neat it was that the museum would park an old car from its collection out in the lot for people to admire up close on their way in.

At this point I nonchalantley walked up and opened the door to retreve my wifes coat. You should have seen the look on their faces!!! They were convinced that some tattooed 30 something year old punk was tampering with museum property.

After retreving her coat I spent about ten minutes explaining to them that I actually own the car and drove it there from my home in Salem MI. I showed them around the car for a few and answered their questions and even offered for them to sit in it.

I think that they left with a much greater apreciation of what an 80 year old car is capable of, and hopefully a changed opinion on people who may not always appear what they are.

Many people ask if Ford built the car or did we make it that way.
I've also had a gas station attendant ask me if it runs (right after I filled it
up with gas!)

Some others,
Is it easy to get parts?
How fast will it go?
How much is it worth?
Would you sell it?

While looking at the front of my truck, that has a license frame that states "1931 Ford Pickup", I'm often asked "What is it?" and of course "What year is it?"

When I'm at a show, I made up a sign, describing the truck, and added the statement:
While retaining the basic integrity of the original production configuration, it has been modified for touring and safety with the following:
and then proceed to list all the things that are "non original".

Doesn't stop all the questions, but most.

For many years I have had a license type plate on the rear of my Victoria that says "Repeal the 18th Amendment" I am constantly asked by people what is the 18th amendment.

The 18th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was the prohibition of the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. There was actually no law against drinking it. It became law in 1920 and was repealed by the 21st amendment in 1933.

If a woman asks me the question, after I explain what the 18th amendment was all about, I comment that it is the 19th amendment being repealed that she should be concerned with.

I get all those usual questions. I always answer politely. It never hurts to be courteous, and it's part of the fun. I actually hope someone will come up to me and talk about the car. I had a couple of really down-and-out guys standing by my coupe one day when I came out of the store. They were really raggedy, maybe homeless, but one had a smart phone and asked if he could take a picture of the car. I always say yes, and then I offered to take a picture of him and his friend standing next to it. The way their faces lit up made my day, and maybe theirs too.

A lady about 80 years old once asked me with a twinkle in her eye if I'd give her a ride in the rumble seat. I told her she'd have to get her mother's permission. She laughed out loud at that!

I think people just want to make some kind of contact and take away a story to share. On more than one occasion I've been invited back to somebody's garage because they have an old tool or parts or something they just want to give me.

Back in the day when "Service Stations" were just that, (circa Mid '50s) while on a trip in my AA 280A, I stopped at a station to gas up. The attendant looked at my rig (only ~25 years old at the time) and said that he thought he had a tire that would fit my truck (650x20). He proceeded to go back into his store room, dug thru a bunch of tires and pulled out a brand new, never been mounted 650x20 and just gave it to me.

"Does it go?" *while filling it with gas*

"You need to have that car towed away!" Why not drive it away?

Me too (@31), but mine is hidden for work reasons

The most common I get is "are you going to restore it?"

I enjoy answering the questions I get. I try to be polite even if the questions sound somewhat rude.

If I see people walking that are taking a "hard" look at the car, I'll often sound the horn and wave. Get's many laughs and waves back.

The questions and the waves are good for me and the hobby.

Since I'm only 19, most common question is "Is that really yours?". and then it's "where do you buy tires?"

Where did you get it?

After months of work the kid and I got the A running. As we pulled out onto the street I warned him, "This car is a chick magnet." Well the car stopped running at the stop sign down on the corner and as the kid and I stood there with our heads under hood a very old woman came by and said "I love your Model A.' When she left I nudged the kid and said, "See, chick magnet." He looked at me and said, "Man she's a cougar even for you."

The problem with the car? Out of gas! The problem with the kid? Lump on the head.

While at the local "cruise nights", I hear a lot of "that would be cool if it was rodded!" and at gas stations, most all young men give a "thumbs up" or something, but many girls and middle aged ladies seem to be completely oblivious to the truck. Older women always seem to stop and have a nice comment of Model A's in their memories. Some have vivid recollections of the old Fords.

I mostly get,how fast does it go? I have a couple of original unrestored cars, and were untouched since the 50's. The only people that mention rodding them are friends who like to harass me.I was sitting in a diner a few years ago with my A pickup out front. An old boy got out of a car with a bunch of other people, and proceeded to point out things about the A he remembered from working on them during the war.As he walked around telling everybody about it he knocked on the front fenders,he hollered out, real steel, none of that plastic s--t here.We were giggling because the truck had fiberglass fenders.I had put them on temporarily 15 years earlier. We didn't say anything to embarrass him in front of his fans. One question I have been getting more of in the last few years is,what is the extra pedal? Seems like lots of people don't know what a clutch is.With my roadster pickup that is all painted up I get asked about where I bought it. When I say I built it they say,oh,it's a kit.Nope, just a pile of parts in the shed years ago.Where did you get the directions?Online?A lot of people just can't fathom building a car from scratch.

After asking " You drove that all the way from New Jersey?" the next question is " Ain't you worried it will break down?"

I enjoy the questions and comments as well. It's a chance to promote the hobby. Young folks seem attracted to the car and I'll talk to them as long as they like. Most common questions are "What year is it" and "Where did you get it" ?

I once came out to the parking lot after touring a winery with our club and there were three German tourists sitting in the front seat of my car, while the fourth snapped photos. One of them was even wearing my hat! They had the nerve to ask me to ask me the question everyone always asks... how much is this car worth?! grrr.

I live in the area that is in a high traveled area for tourists around Lafayette,la. I always have people asking me about the 31 tudor or the 29 roadster. Every saturday and sunday I have at least 10 people ask me about the car,

I'm in at the time. Resturants and swamp tours with people from Europe and Asia are the big thing and Canada every one wants to see someting CAJUN. I always talk with the people , let them take pictures and [ all you guys that are going to say ahh dont do that you will get sued, just keep quite and dont rattle my cage, cause I do it and like the enjoyment people get] I take people on a ride for about 3 miles everyone really has a great time. I have many addresses and telephone numbers from people that have ridden in my cars and they all tell me that if me and my family are in their part of the world please call ahead before we arrive and they will show us a great time. The most asked question I get is where do you find the tires ? have fun modelAtony Lafayette,la

I get the standard questions as stated above but the most often heard comment is: "You should put a surfboard on top!"

As for being a chick magnet, I have noticed that when I am driving it around town, especially during parades, the younger ladies smile bigger and pay more attention to the car than most of the guys. I never have understood that, but it doesn't bother me!

I pretty much get all the above questions. I am answer them politely, even though there's a thousand smart^$@s answers going through my head. A friendship starts with a conversation, and a conversation starts with a question. An old Irish proverb is 'A stranger is a friend you have not yet met'. So I answer the questions, they may be dumb to me, but if you don't know, you ask, so they're not dumb to those who don't know. When I was in the RAAF, I would have to support the aircraft at airshows every so often. There is a whole list of dumb airshow questions that get asked as well.
Reminds me of when some JSDF personal were visiting the RAAF's ARDU, this was told to me by a mate who was posted there at the time. ARDU still had four Dakotas as flying testbeds for different components etc.
JSDF "Ahh, DC-3, museum flight?"
Mate "No, actual line aircraft, still flying"
JSDF "Flying museum, very nice"
Mate "No, still active aircraft"
JSDF "Aussie make funny joke" and then caught up with the rest of the group, having a little giggle to himself.

Funniest question, "You've sure kept it nice, did you buy it new"?
Nicest comment from an ooooold Mexican man: "You're a blessed man to have such a fine car"!
At a farmer's market showing, I put a sign in the quarter window, saying, "Yes, you can touch my car and if you ever made out in a Model A, sit in it & see if you can remember her name"! GREAT FUN!! I also opened both sides of the hood, folks love to see the old green motors. Someone asked me to start it, gathered quite a crowd, I let it run for a long time, then one Ol' Dude cupped his ears while listenin' & said, "You did good"! I "FLOATED" home!! Bill W. Not the most asked question, but a very amusing question. From a six year old child.
Child - Excuse me mister, is this an olden days car?
Me - Yes it is.
Child - It's got funny wheels, do you drive it?
Me - Yes, I do drive it a lot.
Child - Do you also have a proper car?
Me - Yes, I do.
Child - Then why do you drive this old thing?
Me - Speachless (you just gotta love the innocent mind of a child)

serioiusly, my most frequent Q is" how old is it?" I answer" Me, her or the car" usually this gets a chuckle and we can talk about the car. I try and leave them happy and informed about the car and our hobby. I keep copies of Brattons catalogue in my car and hand them out if approprite. I invite them to our next meeting. I tell them about anycars I know for sale. We need to grow this hobby.

I've enjoyed reading the comments and questions on this thread but since my old Betty has not really seen much road time since we have been together, I have not much to add to its content. But you all know, She doesnt have to be on the road to get attention.
This just happend, so I had to come in the house and add this...
As I was rolling the bare chassis out in the drive way to do some prep work for welding, with garage door open so all the world can see the multitude of naked model a parts stacked, scattered and hung through out my garage. I couple of well meaning neighbors of mine enjoying a brisk morning walk, asked "going to fix it up"? It made me chukle with a Yep!
As Bill Ingvall of the Blue Collar Comedy tour would appropriately say... "Heres your sign".

I'm with Tom on this as my answer gets into the history of the car and somewhat into local history. Something you can not put a value on is the history and family and friend connections that landed the car in my posession. Rod

I have the complete history of mine supposedly and like to share it.

I just remembered the most common one I get is "I have cash in my pocket, how much will you sell it for?" This is usually not at a show or out on the road. I had to quit parking the car in my driveway because hot/rat rodders were knocking every day wanting to buy it. They thought they could buy it cheap because it is unrestored and looks barn fresh.

I also have a 39 Ford peeeckup that I use. usually I'm in old clothes and they think they have a sucker here when they ask "How Much?" I cheerfully respond that I have just decided to sell and I will take $42,865 cash today and you can drive it home. Then I wait for their response to see if we can lauf or if they need a lesson in un-rude and un-stupidness.

This has been a wonderful thread to read!

A couple more,not model A per se:

A couple months ago the organizers of an all- Jeep show asked us to bring our 1942 wartime Jeep to their show. We arrived with our Jeep, MBT trailer, 2 WWII bicycles, and both of us in period dress. I was amazed at the number of folks at an all-Jeep show that had never seen a wartime Jeep. I overheard one little guy ask his dad if this was their Jeep's Grandpa? He answered, "more like Great-grandpa in more ways than one." Best, however were a brother/sister pair who were both active duty Army, in fatigues, who were both motor pool mechanics - they must have spent half an hour comparing our Jeep to the Hummers and Buffalos they worked on.

Several years ago I used to volunteer at the WWII Air Museum in Geneseo, NY, and frequently marshaled planes for their annual Wings of Eagles airshow. One year I had just parked a TBM Avenger and spotted a lady smoking directly under a No Smoking sign. I wheeled around and told her "put that out now, can't you read?" She got all huffy and just at that moment the TBM folded his wings back (which is a sight to see on any Grumman). I turned to her and said, "See what you did?" Her jaw dropped open and her male companion hustled her off the field.

This happened just last summer. I drove my coupe up to a nearby sausage house for one of their fine hot dogs, which they cook and serve outside. As I approached the stand, I saw a police patrol car pull up and park right behind me. I thought, "Uh-oh." The officer came up to me and asked, "You get many speeding tickets in that?" We both had a good laugh and I offered to buy his lunch, but he said he couldn't accept that!

I'm thinking that's why so many post ridiculous prices on their cars. It keeps those "how much will it take to buy it" questions to a minimum and if someone is willing to pay that price then it's theirs.

My son and I had been working on our car for some time; finally got to the running chassis point and would drive it all around the neighborhood while sitting on seats made from cut-down barstools. Had to "test drive" it quite a bit, in fact!
Finally, after getting the body on, we were out again. The sweet elderly lady down the street asked 'Oh how nice. Did you sell your old-fashoned car?'
I smiled, said 'No, we've still got it. Would you like to go for a ride?'

There is so many answers that I didn't take the time to read them all, so this could be a repeat of someone elses experience. I was at a car cruise last year and a elderly women saw my A and asked me if I was the original owner. I thought she was putting me on, but she never smiled or laughed. I said " good Lord lady, I'm old but not that old" I got a 28 tudor

I live in a tourist kind of town and get lots of the same questions , but I get one that I don't see listed. I have 3 labs and when I go into anyplace there is usually someone taking pictures of the truck and/or dogs in it. The question I get is "do they let me drive it" , because they take up the whole seat as soon as I get out. It kind of surprises me because my A's aren't all fixed up pretty. I drive mine nearly every day and the dogs love to ride with me. The only thing wrong is there isn't much room in a 28 closed cab pick-up for 3 dogs and an old man.

I get all the same questions. However the funniest one I got was not on the Model A but on my 1967 Sunbeam Alpine by an apprentice mechanic. He pointed to the alternator relay control box and told me that was the computer and we could "chip it" I nicely informed him of his error and pointed out that a computer in 1967 was not much smaller than the car ! He then proceeded to argue with me that no car could run without a computer!! Karl

I have had bullet hole decals on my Tudor for ten years. Many times older people will reach out and touch them to see if they are real A lot of people ask if they are real, to which I reply"Yeh, I live in a tough neighborhood!" It always gets a laugh. The other comment I get is"Wow, just like Bonnie and Clyde's car!"

Not most asked but most unusual.....A grinning 90 something year old woman asked "Do you know what we used to do in that when I was a girl?" while pointing to the rumble seat. Club had taken our Model A's to a nursing home for an afternoon with the residents.

I go to many cruises and shows, about 2 yrs ago my brother (who doesn't like him either) got me a nice bumper sticker that's in the back window
Obama...Impeach Him There's also a hammer/sickle on the sticker.
Everyone that sees it wants to know where to get one or gives me a thumbs up if I'm sitting near the car. Have only had one middle aged woman who didn't like it.

I have my hubs set up so I can run stock wheels or my aluminum hot rod wheels but run the aluminum ones for everything but parades.
Consequently the car has a hot rod look on the outside so obviously the first question is, "How fast"?
I refer them to the dash plaque from the SCTA that says, 153.7 mph. (Not "A" engine)
(Actually the car went 163.9 with a different body)
(It would do 93 with the "B" engine, the current 2 door body and geared for hill climbing.)
Anyway, then the conversation starts and sometimes it develops to a long lasting friendship. You meet some of the neatest people in supermarket parking lots.

I've had most of these at one time or another, also. But my favorite one will probably always be:
" Poppa can we drive your old truck to get ice cream?"
