Default Rear Axel Bearing Race Repair Kit

One off my rear axel bearing races has some corrosion damage on the bottom of the race. I read this damage is common on a Model A. Bert's sales a repair kit (A-1224). The caption for the kit says to press the new sleeve over the existing bearing race. Can the sleeve be tapped on without removing the axel to us a press?

A-1224 is to repair the rear hub race. If you are asking about the rear axle
housing race the repair kit is A-1225-S, I believe you have to machine the
axle housing to install it.

The general answer to what you are asking is 'No'. To do the job properly, you will need to machine the housing and then interference-fit the new race.

Excellent set of photos. Do you have one that shows how the banjo flange is attached to the driven part of the lathe?

Tom, I can probably take one of it. All it is, is a large disc that I machined to fit into the lathe that has a counterbore for the axle flange to slip into. The tail-stock live center pushes it in and holds it. I am sure that if you 'hung the tool' it would/could spin but it hasn't yet. I also suppose you could weld a dowel onto the disc to act as a dog. I use a bull-nose live center on the outboard end and use shim stock to center it.

When I machined my trumpet housings, I just used a 4 jaw (it was the larger of the two chucks available) and chucked the housing directly in the chuck. A little fussy with a dial indicator (dodging the jaws of the chuck mostly) but got repeatable indication bringing the cross slide back to the reference number.

It doesn't have to be that close actually. You're machining the end of the housing which is held in center - which IS close.

We remove the race in the axle housing and center off that surface.

Brent, I see that the sleeve you are using is much thinner than those I have seen before. The others I have seen are too thick, and require removal of too much native material. Are you making your own sleeves? Or what is your source if you don't mind my asking?

I think it may be an optical illusion. There are two different kits available but there is only like .015" difference. I most use the thinner sleeve but I stock the other one just so when we do have a boo-boo and machine the housing too much, I use the thicker one to make the recovery.

Who are the sources/suppliers of top quality sleeves with the right hardness? I have been using the sleeves from C&G, who else has them. I know there were problems with some sleeves being too soft and wearing prematurely.
While we are on this, who supplies the best B-1225 wheel bearing? I just bought six NOS bearings on the auction site, what do we do when that source dries up?

News to me! I have never heard this. Is this something that is hearsay or you have first-hand knowledge of??

Not first hand, but V8 car owners have reported this.

I presume a carbide bit is used with no problems to machine the original races?

I asked our local old-time machinist about doing this for several sets of housings and he told me, "don't bother, you can't afford the acetylene it takes to heat and anneal (soften) the races for cutting." I just figured he was not interested in the work.
