Lap blankets
My lucky day, I scored 4, 1930's wool plaid lap blankets that came from an estates sale. A friend who does sales always let's me known when he finds a treasure. So far he has found me a Trunk from a 29 Packard, even got a picture of the car and a radiator/hood ornament from a 1931 Cadillac!

Re: Lap blankets
They don't have to be original to look great and to be very useful. You still have a great find that will be especially useful to your passengers. To 99 % of the lookers they will look original. Congratulations on a great find !

Re: Lap blankets
I keep a large mover's blanket in my Phaeton. It helps keep the food cooler cold, and at night it helps keep me and the passengers warm.

Here is a picture of the car robe that my Mother and Dad got with there new 1930 Chev. It is still in great shape. I used it in a Town sedan I had when I lived in Mich.

Re: Lap blankets
I did not know about the Lap Robes...I like that.
For winter outdoor blankets I have always been a fan of the HBC type wool blankets and have two of them in the car. The two that I use in the back of the Briggs are not HBC and I am having trouble identifying exactly what they are. They have been handed down through 3 generations. Attached are photos if anyone can help. The unique thing is only the three stripes, which is like a Faribault, but the black end stitching is unlike anything I can find. I'm thinking these have to be of the right era but I am coming up empty. If anyone can provide any info I'd appreciate it. |

Re: Lap blankets
Last year at this time I purchased 2 from a club that was selling them as a fund raiser. They had a Model A picture in the fabric. They are very classy looking. Hopefully a club member of the selling club will see this post and advise as to whether they are still selling them.

Re: Lap blankets
My lap blanket story:
I was able to come by a WWll USN blanket that came off a destroyer. It was used by a friend's dad that had his ship torpedoed in the Atlantic. Another destroyer pull him out and gave him this blanket. Its in great condition and is very heavy wool.

Have a Navy blanket, gray, from the 60's. Still nice.

Re: Lap blankets
Once, doing payback time, I went to a quilt show with my bride. As expected, it was a real nodder ... until I came to a very well used quilt that was embroidered with the birth, marriage, and death dates of EIGHT (8) generations of the same family. The accompanying card noted that the owner of the quilt had acquired it WRAPPED AROUND AN ENGINE BLOCK.
That made an impression on me. Obviously. The pages of the calendar sure to turn quickly! |

Re: Lap blankets
Bruce's story reminded me of how I used an old quilt when I live in S.D. In the winter I folded it to a size that would wrap around my Diesel Rabbit engine. I did this to help the engine retain heat during the winter, but it had the added benefit of making the engine very quiet. It served it's purpose very well.

Re: Lap blankets
I have 2 era wool blankets, which were often used as a ''picnic rug'' here.
One came from my Grandma's 1939 V8 Deluxe Sedan & the other from the wifes Grandfather's Willys Knight touring car. Cars both long gone, but not the rugs. |
