Default Rear axle seals from napa?

Anyone have a seal number for the rear axle seals in my '46 1/2 ton pickup? If I can order them from my napa store I get them the next day but they don't have a listing. Also it looks like there is a sort of fiber washer out at the nut end as a type of seal. Would this be part of it? My first rodeo with a half ton. Always a collector of the bigger trucks with full floating rear axle. Thanks.

I seem to remember that the seals are the same on 70s' big Ford trucks also. But I dont have the numbers either. I know, a lot of help that is.

37840-48 and 49324 and 49024 inside seal is 49029 these are NAPA numbers I wrote ion my master parts book years ago on the rear end page that shows the seals. Do not remember the difference with the first three. Last one fits inside the housing and the torq
ue tube for closed driveshafts.

Did you check the Green Book? Looks to me like it should use the same seal as the passenger cars, 78 1175-A. C&G listing, not sure how to cross-reference to NAPA.

You can use the 20538 number and search for other sources, if you want.

Pricey seal.
$43.00 for two March 5 2012 plus shipping for one was another $10.00. Its a C/R seal, so you could compare dimentions with National to come up a less costly seal.

Rock auto has them for about half the price of NAPA. http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/f...heel+seal,1860

I bought a new rear wheel bearing and seal from C & G early Ford Parts a while back. Can't recall the price but it couldn't have been too bad or I would have looked elsewhere. Have not installed it yet but it looks right.

Wow! When it rains it pours! I got the brake work completed today and slid the drums on with the old seals. I was able to read the number after cleaning them up. National 5877 as above. I was so dug in on the project I barely stopped to pee, never mind calling napa. Next chance I will drain the rear end so as I'm rolling the vehicle around, the new brakes won't get contaminated if the seals are bad. Everything about the brakes was either missing or terribly rusted together. The three way intersection of clevis pins and adjusters for the parking brake took hours of under car misery to free all the parts. I'll call around about seals tomorrow with all this newfound info. Once again, Many thanks!

Ordered some on amazon prime today. Looks like they already shipped and will be here tomorrow. 39.95 for the pair. And.. I don't have to make the 24 mile round trip to napa. Ups will deliver them to the shop! Thanks for all the numbers.

They are a pretty tight fit. Getting the old ones out was tough. Got the passenger side done and then proceeded to drive in the next one backwards. I didn't notice it until the drum wouldn't engage. I did know there two sides to these, but I was in a hurry because I was going to be late for a family get together. I tried everything I could think of to remove it without damage, but in the end, I just ordered a new one.... Dang. As for the outer fiber washer, I took some jute string, coated it with gasket maker and wrapped a few turns around the axle so it would fit into the recess, installed nut and washer and I think I should be good there.

We buy our rear hub seals from C&G. For the 36-48 cars, the factory number is 78-1175. This is for the 2.78" OD axle housings. The pickups, 28-36, the diameter is 3.12". In mid 1936 the change to the 2,78 seals was made. We prefer the seals with the red outer edge coating. We had some of the non coated seals, and most collapsed before they could be seated in the hub. Number for C&G is 800/266-0470

The new National 5877 seals will be here tomorrow. I didn't have trouble tapping in the seals without damage. If I hadn't installed the second one backwards, all would have gone without a hitch. Given a side by side choice I would go with the coated type. It almost seems these National seals, boxed by Federal Mogul are a rawhide seal. Just in case they were, I soaked them overnight in 30 wt. The material is brown.
