Question Test Drive

I have searched my manuals and the site and must be missing something so here goes

I have my 29 Coupe up on jack stands and thought I would slowly shift thru the gears a little before actually driving the car.

When I try to shift in 1st or reverse it grinds. I do not force it.
Comments for help here?
tks

I had the same problem with my first restoration. A close friend came over and just pulled it into first gear. No problems since. The gears and bearings were all new and cost $80.00. It was 1970. Just do it.

Your Idle speed might be too high.

Try applying the brakes first, in case the clutch is dragging a little. This will stop the shaft from free wheeling from the oil drag inside the transmission. I am also assuming you have the clutch adjusted correctly and did not bend the disc during the install.
Idle speed must be close to normal, not fast.

You could put the tranny in first gear then start the engine. Then push the clutch in then the brakes to be sure the disc isn't stuck to the flywheel. Also you have to allow enough seconds for the clutch disc to stop spinning before shifting from neutral to first, just like when at a red light.

Normally at a light or when you first start the car nothing in the tranny is moving. Nothing moving nothing to grind. So I would also think that the clutch is not separating.

The clutch disc, input shaft, and cluster gear are all spinning, unless you are holding the clutch pedal to the floor while waiting at the light.

Riding the clutch is bad practice because you are wearing out the thrust babbit and throw out bearing. I try to watch for the yellow light, then step on the clutch. By the time the light turns green, the input shaft usually has stopped spinning.

Exactly, nothing moving, nothing to grind.
