Default Clutch/pressure plate question.

Hi Fellas,

Can I run an 11" clutch and pressure plate on a stock '40 engine/trans?

Seems I remember doing this a long time ago, but then I seem to remember more and more things that turn out not to be true!

Thanks for your input!

Dick

You can, but why would you? Unless you are planning on pulling tree stumps a small diameter would be a much better option.

You won't like it . Stick with the 9".

Flywheel would need to be precisely drilled to mount the 11" clutch, and you have to remove the pan to install the clutch or change clutch disk in the future, because the 11" pressure plate will not fit through the bell housing opening with the pan on. A 9" or 10" is a better choice unless it is in a heavy truck or dragster.

Thanks for the responses. I have the flywheel and pressure plate and was trying to save a buck. Shops want around $275 to re-drill the flywheel. I was thinking it was just more surface but apparently much stiffer also. I'll find a 9 or 10".
Appreciate the help!

There was a truck pan for the early Ford V8 engines that share the same characteristics. This pan allows the 11-inch clutch to be removed & installed since it has a removable cover in the bottom of the clutch/flywheel well. These pans are out there but they may be difficult to find now days.

The 11-inch can be a bit heavy on pedal pressure too.

Go with the stock 9 in. or a 10 in clutch. 11 in. is overkill on your left leg. Plus I don't think it will fit using the stock 40 engine and transmission.

I made a couple of phone calls and was lucky to locate a 10" flywheel & pressure plate.
The kind gentleman gave them to me! Will probably use a new pressure plate after I get the flywheel resurfaced.
Thanks again for all the great advice and information on this!

Even though the 11" C&PP would have fit your application, I think you will be much happier in the long run with that 10".
I've also been extremely happy with the clutch and pressure plate cores I have had rebuilt by Fort Wayne Clutch & Drive Line.

I just put a "Fort Wayne Clutch" unit in my '51 and couldn't be happier with it. But after checking prices, I'm going to try "Van Pelt Sales" next time.
