Stubborn Tight 2-Piece Valve Guide Won't Come Out
I purchased a valve guide removal tool and it worked great, for the first seven guides. The eighth guide is a problem. Of course.
To be fair, I've been deliberately easy-going with the hammer. The first guides came out fairly easy, but in this last one, the guides and the block have become 'one'. I've used Kroil and PB Blaster for days before starting the job. (Please, no "Miracle-Cure-Penetrating-Oil" solutions...I don't think that's the answer here) Has anyone really whacked it hard with a hammer? Jeez, I hate doing that. Any other ideas? |

This is very extreme and used only as a last resort if all else fails, but it does work. Remove the cam and lifters, push the valve all the way up and cut the head off. Push the vale steam down and out through the lifter hole. Use the largest bar of steal that you have that will fit through a valve guide hole without touching the block and drive the guide down and out with a big hammer.

Re: Stubborn Tight 2-Piece Valve Guide Won't Come Out
I have had the very same problem .I got the valve as high as possible and cut it off as low as possible .I used a big suitable drill bit and drilled out the guide not touching the block . The remaining "sleeve" then knocked out easily with a drift . Cleaned up all the swarf with a strong magnet, I had put a rag in the chest prior to drilling . The iron guide material I found to be very soft and drilled out very easily . This was quite a while ago and I think with the tappet down i could remove the bottom part of the valve I might have cut the bottom part in the valve chest but I cant remember having to do that .

Re: Stubborn Tight 2-Piece Valve Guide Won't Come Out
When someone is paying us to disassemble an engine for rebuild, wasting time on removing a stubborn guide is not prudent. Our method is to raise the valve until the mushroomed end is against the guide. Use a cut-off tool to cut the stem and remove the head of the valve. Grind the end that was just cut to remove any burs and also chamfer the end. Drive the remaining portion of the valve stem thru the guide and out through the lifter bore. Use a Air Riveter gun or a large Air Hammer and rattle on top of the guide halves. They generally will either come right out, -or shatter where the pieces of the guide will come out.

Re: Stubborn Tight 2-Piece Valve Guide Won't Come Out
I used a heavy copper hammer and had to whack a few of them pretty stoutly. Are you using the bent rod type tool or the one that fits round the valve stem and you whack the top of the valve? I used the latter type. Not much luck with the former style. And like it or not I do have a magic formula and it works great: acetone and transmission fluid. I have an old screwdriver with a notch ground in the blade I hold the tool tight against the valve stem with while I assault and batter with the copper hammer.

I GOT IT OUT!
A special thanks to the folks who have done this job before, without breaking something. I needed the encouragement to get more aggressive with it without worrying about damage to the block. I've seen too many broken cast iron parts. I'm sure glad I didn't need to drill the valve guide out. |

Re: Stubborn Tight 2-Piece Valve Guide Won't Come Out
The block i removed the guide from was a USA model "B" block which I knew had a reputation for being a bit fragile in the upper valve seat area. I had given the guide a few fairly hefty bops but caution crept in and I then drilled it out. it was surprising how quick and easy it was .If it had been an English Dagenham block no doubt I could have hit it harder as they are a much heavier casting with a thicker top deck and not prone to cracking
