Installing a mechanical temperature gauge?

I have all the needed parts to install said gauge, but I am wondering what to do with the excess length of lead to the probe. Yes, I know I can't cut it.

My thought is too bundle it up loosely in the cab and up under the tank. My gauge will be located below the speedometer. If anyone has done this, I would appreciate hearing about their experience.

A large coil or two behind the gas tank would be my choice. Stuff in some foam rubber so the coil doesn't rattle.

I have just installed one in my 30 phaeton. tapped the sender into the casting on top of the head leading to the top hose and the gauge under the dash above the steering wheel . The excess tube I coiled up with a cable tie and attaché to the right hand side of the scuttle under the fuel tank. For us right hand side drivers it keeps it well out of the our legs.
Hope this is of some assistance.
ps:One thing it did show was the need for a thermostat if I wanted to have a warm running engine ie 160/170 degrees

How long is you capillary tube? Mine is 72" and by running it down and following the wires I found I had very little left over and no need to coil it.



But I mounted the gauge on the steering column mount so maybe that made the difference.

Tom has the right idea.
I had very little cable/tubing left over, maybe two small coils hidden under the gas tank.
I'm glad I installed it, hope you will be happy with yours.

Thanks to all. I hadn't thought about routing it through the floorboard (DUH!).
I will get started soon. Thanks also for the confirmation that a thermostat is needed. I already have that and no cooling problems.

I've seen a double post just seconds or up to a couple minutes apart, which I assume is caused by the poster pushing the "submit reply" button twice on a slow to respond computer, but how does Jack's double post happen more than an hour later? I'm not computer savvy, so just wondering?

Greetings JackA, A bit of history re my temp gauge installation. When I purchased the car back in May it was having intermittent heating problems but I was 99% sure it was related to a blocked and aged radiator so put it into my budget to replace the radiator. This was done with a recore done by our local radiator specialist. This solved the heating problem to the extent that the engine did not warm up to a temp that I was happy with. ( you have to understand that I am from the generation that was brought up on "wear in an engine occurs the most when the engine is cold") and the radiator cap temp gauge was not showing a reading. Hence the thermostat and additional temp gauge installation. I drilled and tapped into the top hose casting on the head and put a mechanical gauge unit there and mounted the gauge itself below the Chapter celebrating 50 yrs this weekend so looking forward to catching up with model A"rs from all over the south Island.
