Diff carrier assembly dimensions
Hi all. I'm working on the diff from my 1928 A. The insides of the carrier assembly were somewhat torn up, so I scrounged for a replacement. I found a lightly used assembly. But in prepping for assembling the whole works, I discovered that one dimension is different.
On the right hand side (opposite the ring gear) the OD of the outer housing of the old one is is 3.875. On the new one the dimension is 4.125. This difference is enough to prevent the nuts from going on to the bolts which hold the carrier together, and the ring gear in place. I could turn the new part down a bit, it looks like there's plenty of meat there. Or I could put the bolts in the other way, heads to the right, and nuts to left, on the ring gear side. Advice? Re: Diff carrier assembly dimensions
I think you may be confusing the early carriers with the late carriers. The 28 carriers were identical on each side. The later were two different part numbers and the ring gear could only go on one side. The bolts were also different. The bolt heads on the early are dome shape, the bolts on the late are flat/rectangular.

It sounds like if I just get the right bolts, my earlier style parts should work fine. Learn something new every day. Thanks! |
