You can operate at least two ways, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and then shift lever to Overdrive.
Second method is to make a 6 speed out of it, (like a big truck ) 1 low, 1high, 2low,2high,3low, 3high
Push in clutch and shift, Bruce

ON the knob it says high and low if I remember correctly. I have a cable version and pulled out it is out of over drive and that would correspond to the lever pulled back. With the lever shoved forward you would be in overdrive. You need to push in the clutch when making the shifts. It would be wise to check the fluid level in the box mounted on the torque tube. Small hole on the side about half way up. Uses and allen wrench to check it. I use mine as an overdrive get up to about 40+ and shift it into overdrive.

Hope that helps.
