Default testing the solonoid for the starter

how do I test the starter solonoid off the car? If I ground the solonoid and apply power to the small terminal, shouldn't I hear the soloniod move?

Maybe you will hear it. A ground and a power through. Old way to jump a car was with a scewdriver.

Ground to 3rd pole +. Power to the terminal - . Ground to the little pole. Coil won't move without +/- forces.

They rarely not work.

Granted they do not care about polarity.

It's a very simple device. On the large poles is a though charge of same. + or -. They only connect when an opposite charge is employed. In this case a single ground wire from the starter button to the small pole.
