Default Generator Belt Installation

Were the Generator belts ever easy to replace -- that is, getting it pasted the crank pully? Or what? I'm 80 now, it's becoming difficult.

I have the dampener pulley on the front of my car so it is more difficult than with the standard pulley. I use a floor jack to jack up the front of the engine a little which helps. I put a block of wood between the jack and the pan to protect the pan. I have the Float-a-Motor rear mounts which allows the engine to pivot a little. I think that with the stock mounts you may have to loosen the bolts. I disconnect the two large bolts in the front motor mount to allow the engine to pivot higher.

An alternative is the belt which is made up of a number of links. The belt is unhooked so that there is a free end which is fed under the crankshaft pulley and then the belt is hooked back up to form a loop.

Another alternative is to find someone to help. A son or grandson perhaps.

Use the right size belt. The generator pulley Wes designed to be remove so you could replace the belt easily.

You didn't say how you were trying to fit the belt. I apologise if I am going to tell you something you already know but many don't. When fitting a belt, put it on the biggest pulley first and the smallest last. Much easier.

The Model A Belt is 42 inches, placed over the water pump assembly, not yet on the water pump puller. With the belt not yet on any pullies, the crank pully gets it first, followed by the generator pully with the water pump lastly. I'm troubled with the crank.
Someone mentioned a belt with links -- I'm interested

YES, I've tried generator pully last too, not about to jack front of engine
Tks

As mentioned earlier, I have also jacked up the engine with a block of wood under the oil pan and used a VERY long screw driver to push the belt under the pulley.

I wonder what a person would do with a modern car if the pulley broke, bumper fell off (wire ties?) car got rusty or brakes just wore out. Should we just drive our A’s into oblivion? What ever happened to maintenance and care. I just have to stop now. I have to run over to Lowes and get some stove bolts to put on the cowl lacing. Sorry for the rant.

Exactly. The generator pulley is easy to pop off, place the fan belt in the pulley groove, and bolt back on the generator. That leaves plenty of adjustment for the fan belt.

You can buy the link belt at Fenner Drives, see link below. The top width for the Model A is 5/8 of an inch.
