'53 flathead 6v Pertronix conversion
My dad has a '53 wagon, all stock. We want to convert it to Pertronix.
It's still 6v positive ground with a generator. Will the original coil work? Will Pertronix work ok with the generator? Has anyone done this swap and can take a pic of the wiring or explain it better because the directions are a little confusing on how to wire it to the coil/ignition. Thanks! |

Re: '53 flathead 6v Pertronix conversion
I would suggest installing a new set of napa echlin contacts and living happily ever after.
Positive ground six volt PERTRONIXS have some issues with voltage issues, and voltage spikes etc........ |

Re: '53 flathead 6v Pertronix conversion
I have a '52 F1 - 6 volt - positive grd. Installed a Pertronix Ignitor distributor kit with one of their Flamethrower coils about7 years ago. I love it!!! Installed the coil first and that alone was a big improvement - then put in the Pertronix Ignitor kit - #1283P6 - and it runs like a top!!

Re: '53 flathead 6v Pertronix conversion
Nothing different or special about coil to dist. wiring - wire pos. side of coil to grd. - neg. side to distributor. Then, of course, the coil center wire is connected to the distributor cap center terminal. You may want to call Tony Neisz at Philbin Rebuilt Products - 1-800-867-7301 if you still have questions on Pertronix dist. or coil products.

This is not correct. With a stock Pos Gnd system the feed wire goes to coil (-) and the coil (+) side goes to the distributor. With Pertronix, the feed wire goes to the Pertronix Unit, then one wire from Pertronix to coil input (-), and the other side of coil (+) goes to ground. |

This was sent to me from Pertronics, I went with a chevy dist conversion
(points type) from Bubba's From Pertronics: double click for larger pic If you have a o.d. trans you need that resistor in the o.d. kickdown wire. |

An observation from one who's been there, done that: Point will always get you home, while Pertronix maybe not so much. Just sayin'.

Re: '53 flathead 6v Pertronix conversion
Guess I'm just lucky or something but I've never had any problems with my Pertronix Ignitor set-up - still have the old points, etc. but do not carry them with me in the '52.
My records show I put the Pertronix system in in 2006 - either July or August. Again - just keeps on ticking and taking a licking (like the old Timex???) |

Re: '53 flathead 6v Pertronix conversion
No luck about it … they make a quality deal.
I use to keep a fleet of 18 ex U haul F 600’s running for a friend of mine. They all had old Pertronix conversions with who knows how many miles ….. In 6 years I only had one old one fail and iv never had a new one go bad. The best thing about them is the points screw right back in if need be …. Just keep them in the glove box w condenser and the wire to run to the coil. |
