I think they are probably fine for a milder climate like Missouri, but here in Wisconsin I think it would be very expensive to operate.

No, it was a Ford / Schram air compressor. Also called a FordAir. Had a nice 59A block in it. Al

I use a direct vent wall furnace that I got for free from a guy that was remodeling his rec room. It mounts directly against the wall and the whole combustion chamber is vented to the outside. The whole unit is about 5 feet by 20 inches wide by 8 inches or so deep. Its 3500 btu's and heats my 22 x 24 shop very efficiently. It was made by SEARS so parts availability is easy. If you scrounge the Penny-Saver type adds or local CraigsList you should be able to find a good one for cheap, the usually cost about 600 bucks new. The great thing is that with it being direct vent there is no worry about paint or fuel funes igniting so the shop is much safer. I dont have a picture but if you look at GRAINGERs web catalog they should have a picture there just to give you an idea . Mitch.

I have two wood stoves, one is the standard barrel stove, found at the dump because the barrel rotted out, new oil drum later and I have a free stove.
The other is a behemoth that came with the garage. It will take a 4 foot log, has a blower to move heat out, and a bi-metal automatic damper made from a strip of aluminum and steel. Probably weighs about 800 pounds, so it's staying where I found it.

Hi Gumpy; No photos. I've got a 24'X36' cape style garage. Two bays and storage down stairs, ten foot ceiling. Upstairs is all wood shop with eight foot ceiling. All is well insulated. I installed a HD 75,000 LP Hot Dawg ceiling unit, it comes with installation instructions. I had our building inspector inspect it and he liked my work, passed with no problems. I had it inspected for insurance protection. I installed two 3"X12" vents and pull garage ceiling heat up into wood shop with 12 volt 100ma computor fans I got for about a buck each. The cold air return is the stair well. I keep it at fifty to sixty degrees because it takes alot of energy to warm all the steel if it gets real cold. I believe you can also get the same heater that will burn natural gas. Good luck, Craig.

I installed a Dayton overhead gas heater 20 years ago. It was sized to the area. Has worked great ever since through some cold IL winters. I leave it set for 52 degrees when I'm not working. Never a problem.

I think having it inspected for insurance purposes is a good idea....then most everything in the shop is covered...it may also be a good idea to have an appraisal of your classic on file in case something happens!

My son did the tin work because he likes to borrow the 34`s. I can now check on my cars at night in my pyjamas.

When oil price reach 3.50/gallon, and they will hear in new england electric heat will be the cheapest source. Rinnai floor mounts are what i put in most garages, quiet/propane

You could run a small village on 18000KW . How about 18KW?
That would be $3.80 per hour here.

Like Randy, I have a Reznor propane heater hanging in the corner of my garage. I believe it is the same as the Mad Dog from Moline. Does a fine job. I am well insulated. I keep my heater at around 45 degrees except when I am working in the garage, then I bump it up to around 58 degrees. Plenty warm when working. My garage is 28' x 24' and the annual cost for propane (right now) is around $450. Not bad.

Like Walts37, I nstalled an electric 220V and it keeps a 2 car garage at 60 degrees and when I want towork I crank it up to 72+, works great, heater, wiring ckt breaker total cost around $250, my labor, easy to install. See pics, besure of elecrical code in your area for connecting, etc. Does add a little to your electric bill.

Heating oil is already $3.31 a gallon here, Diesel is $3.79, and gas is $3.59.
I wouldn't feel so bad about paying high prices, except we have the Alaska Pipe Line in our back yard(literally it's 1/4 mile from my house) and we have a refinery in North Pole(10 miles away).Electricity isn't any better because they started tacking on a "fuel surcharge" to our bills.

the white square one is a dayton heater and costs about $1.75 a day to operate and is hard wired, the brown one was from HD when i needed heat and the the Dayton was in storage from moving. i use the dayton now and the brown one sits as a back up. now if you have a generator that has a 240v plug the brown has a plug and can be plugged into that for a heat source in a power outage
