1937 Ford Coupe - Fuel sending unit

Hey guys,

I had the sending unit replaced when the car was in the US and now here in Australia, its not working properly. I'm not sure of the brand.

It would only move from empty to half a tank (half a tank when full). Pulled the unit and checked its movement and even when moved to its extremes (cam movement) its ohm range wont move close enough to 0 to show a full tank.

When grounding the fuel gauge shoots up to full.

Can someone here please advise of a decent unit that works with the original gauge? 6v.

Also, what ohm range I should be looking at.

Old gauge new sender apples and oranges. The original sender should have been cleaned and fitted with a new float. Doing the best with what you have, adjust the float arm to read zero accurately, and live with that.

Hey Alan,

Yeah, unfortunately I had no say in the installation of the replacement unit and this new unit wont go to zero no matter how hard we try, making it pretty useless.

Is the float you have brass or cork?

That horizontal rod has a bent section that acts as a cam and pulls the brass centre in or out adjusting the ohms. The max movement up or down wont allow the change on ohms to meet whats required to get to a full tank (or close to 0 ohms).

Definitely brass and very new looking. Also a clear whiteish sealer around the underside.

The King - Seely sending unit shown in the photo does not operate on the Ohms Law principle and must be used with an original King-Seely fuel gauge. You can remove the lid from the unit and turn the star wheel to fine tune the adjustment with the OEM gauge. You may also have to bend the float arm. Also, make sure the brass float is not cracked causing it to fill up with gas. Read all this including the links. You have to have the patience of a toothache when working with your sending unit as it's a tedious process.

[38 coupe]

All 36-55 Ford sending units are the same, with different arms crimped on. You can carefully remove the arm and swap a different one (or make a new one if necessary) on if the sender is working properly.
