Default 40 Distributor rotor

In rebuilding my 40 distributor, it looks like a rather large gap between the rotor tabs and the cap tabs. What should the gap between the rotor tabs and the distributor cap tabs be?

As close as possible with out hitting the inner cap points,i would say between .020 and .040 should be ok. ken ct.

Is your gap directly opposite the contacts or off set side ways to the contact? There are two version contact caps, 32-36 and 37-41 the contact cap spacing is different and they do not index 32-6 spacing is 1" , 37-41 is 1 1/8"

Dick is correct. I am attaching a pic that shows both versions. The 68-12116 inner plate is correct for the 1937-41 distributors.

There are no specific gap for this that i know of,i assumed you had the correct caps as dick said.Older caps also for 37-41 are small diameter contact pins than 34-early 36 which are much fatter diam. also the spacing is diff. ken ct.
