Default Hay-Dee extension kit

Has anyone heard of the Hay-Dee frame extension kit for the Model T?

This extended the wheelbase 15" & was used on ambulance chassis late in WWI.

It was not like the Smith Form-A-Truck that had a separate frame & rear axle.

A picture would be great!

Bill, I do not know how they worked but would be interested in seeing the bus extension you mentioned.

I did read that after a while Ford made an extended chassis available for the war effort.

Great information & fast as well, Thank you!!

Tmodelman, do you have a picture of the method of attachment to the rear cross member & frame?

The pictures show WWI ambulance vehicles with & without an extended chassis. The original photo has the extended chassis, the reproduction vehicle is on a stock chassis like most of the earlier ambulances were. If you look carefully at the back of both you can see what are canvas bags that cover the litter handles since they project through the tail gate.

It must have been horrible being shot up & bouncing across a battlefield hanging way back of the axle in one of these.

If one was to build such a vehicle a Warford transmission would add near 15" & would give the T a lot of help in carrying the heavy body.

Here is a pic of the extension just sitting on a T frame. You can get the idea.

The extension piece really bolts to the std rear crossmember, then tapers to bolt to the frame rails, you can see how that is done in the pic (extension is just hanging on to show how it fit )

....then the drive line attachment pushed back the std Ford drive line 15", the rear axle and rear spring was removed from the std rear crossmember, and re-positioned and bolted to the 'new' crossmember at the back end of the extension frame...leaving the Ford frame un-cut.

The drive line attachment has its own short 15" shaft that goes into the U-joint of the engine, the other end of that shaft couples to the drive shaft inside the torque tube.
