Crank Pulley Help Please?
I am trying to button my engine back up, it is an oddball 59 block with a 3 1/16" bore. It came out of a '37 truck, and had a hodgepodge of ancillaries - '33 generator, mismatched heads, and a '39-40 crank pulley with a fan mount on the front.
I will be putting it into a '32 frame and am planning to mount the fan on the generator. I picked up a crank pulley without a fan mount and was getting ready to install it today. Am I missing an oil slinger/baffle of some sort between the crank pulley and crankshaft gear? Anything else to watch out for when using this pulley on a 59 block? Thanks, Will Kimble www.kimblemandolins.com |

Re: Crank Pulley Help Please?
Yes you need the slinger Ford part # 81A-6310 that will fit the crankshafts up to at least the 59AB, Joblot probably has one or Bob Selzam in New Jersey,j also Mac's shows them for $ 1.75,just don't buy the earlier ones or you will have to bore it out to small i.d. You need a picture?

Re: Crank Pulley Help Please?
Thanks, that is what I needed to know. I have another question about the ratchet bolt - does it get a washer between it and the crank pulley? I have one of the heavy washers from an 8BA but the ratchet bolt has a ramp from the threads to the head that keeps it from seating flat on the washer. Can I replace it with a grade 8 of the same length if I am not gonna use the hand crank?
I am heading back to Mac VanPelt's website to look at the drawings... Thanks again, Will Kimble |

Re: Crank Pulley Help Please?
The ratchet bolt I just took off to get the picture is 1 1/8 " hex,the washer that goes against pulley is 3/16" thick,O.D. is 1 1/2" and i.d. is 3/4" to clear the tapered or reinforced area of screw, I would stay with correct ratchet end myself instead of a hardware store bolt possibly made in China.

Re: Crank Pulley Help Please?
Thanks 37 Coupe, that is a tremendous help. My washer is 3/16" thick and 1 1/2" OD but only 5/8" ID. Looks like I need to find the right washer, too, when I go searching for the slinger. I will try to stick with the ratchet bolt unless I have a clearance issue.

Re: Crank Pulley Help Please?
You are lucky you have the hardest part to find anymore the #81C single pulley that fits 38 up cranks, mine fits in a 37 so I don't know about any clearance issues with 32 with the nut but I doubt it been done for last 70 years.

Re: Crank Pulley Help Please?
When I rebuilt my early 38 21-studder, I couldn't tell from the drawings if the concave or convex side of the slinger should face the pulley and seal. So I positioned it with the concave side forward toward the pulley and seal figuring that it would shield the seal better than the other way around. While no leaks so far, was this the correct assumption?
