Sport Coupe top

I'm looking at a 28-29 Sport Coupe. This car is not stock, but substantially modified.

The original sport coupe has a fixed fabric top using wooden bows for support. My question is: Would I be able to create a folding top, like a cabriolet using this car as a starting point using roadster and fabricated bows or cabriolet parts or ????

How different are the doors on a sport coupe and cabriolet?

I would think the money and time it would take wouldn't be worth it. I'm building a 29 sport coupe basket case now and haven't even gotten to the body yet. The research Ive gathered so far to make it stock is that fitting the top is hard enough let alone the conversion. Different doors, windshield maybe, and all kinds of other thing that the barners will make you aware of.
This is not to say that it cant be done. its JMO.

I have a 28 sport coupe that I am about to put a new top on. I considered the same idea but quickly gave up on that idea. Would be a lot cheaper and less time consuming to get a roadster body, not to mention the finished product wouldn't look like an abomination.

I have a 29 Sport Coupe and after some reading and several wrong parts for top/body I agree with the posts above... I think the time/money is one thing but how's it going to look and fit is another.

Phil, the difference in the doors is huge between a Sport Coupe and a Cabriolet!
The Cabriolet door frame is hinged to allow for the top to go down.

The doors ona cabriolet do not have a top or a back. So, when you roll the window down, the car looks convertible. The cabriolet doors do look like Briggs sedan doors with the tops cut off.

You know, there is a guy here in Dallas on the ford barn classifieds with a cabriolet that wants to sell and buy a roadster. Maybe you could sell yours rather than cutting, buy his cabriolet, and then he can get the money for a roadster. Thus not destroying any original Model As on the process.

I'm working on a 29 Business Coupe (Same body style,but different top brackets and bows, than a Sport Coupe) and a 29 Cabriolet, way different cars, not a good idea, IMO.

Almost anything is doable if you have the talent. When I say "almost", that means you can make things function but it can NEVER pass for a Cabriolet. For most folks creating a custom car that is not an issue. From your question I assumed that is where you are coming from.

Now here is my bottom line take on the issue. If you have to ask that question in general terms then no, YOU can't do it. However some folks have a clear vision and dream of what they want to achieve and the resources to convey that vision to the right talent and get it done. Not cheap, but again doable.

If this is important to you and you have the resources then by all means go for it regardless of what others say.

I have seen this done on a hot rod here; Spt Coupe body & doors with a folding top. Actually, it looked good & I doubt any of them would have realised it did not start life as a Cabriolet. As said, anything is 'do-able' if thats what you want.
