I know that there were 37,644 Business Coupes produced in the USA in 1929 and 933 Foreign wise for a total of 38577. There was no production in Walkerville (Canada). Just when the "Oval Window" assembly, A-54120, was adopted, including the other parts of the assembly, can be figured out by going to the MAFFI site and looking up the part numbers. But then again, was it released for production in late 1928 or early 1929 is unknown to me at this time. Pluck |

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
I suspect that any production numbers for 1929 need to be tempered with the knowledge that at least thru Feb, the Business Coupes looked like 1928's. They did not have the oval window feature.

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
A book I have, under May 1928, makes a statement " The Business Coupe was a new body style which resembled the Sport Coupe with a fabric covered rear quarter but without the Landau irons of the Sport Coupe." (no mention of oval windows).
Production Business Coupe (54A) for 1928: Domestic - 37345 Foreign - 258 Production Business Coupe (54A) for 1929: Domestic - 37644 Foreign - 933 A Illistration in the same book shows a 1929 Business Coupe with Oval quarter windows; there is no illistration for the 1928 Business Coupe. The production for the 1929 is the same as reported by "Pluck" Ron |

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
From what I have read the Oval window went into production sometime in March of 1929. Given the total domestic production numbers for 1929 of 37644 one could estimate between 30000 and 31500 for the ten months the oval window was in production thats just a guess.

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
I personally agree with the statement that the 1928 Business Coupe was never produced with the Oval windows.
In trhe late 60's I purchased a 1928 Business Coupe in Auburn, CA. The upper rienforcing bracket on the inside had the hole for the upper Landau stud; there was no mounting bracket on the inside wood for the lower Landau stud. In those days original parts were available; I purchased a set or original 28-29 Landau Arms and the lower mounting brackets, and a rumble seat Deck Lid and converted the Business Coupe to a Sport Coupe. What a dumb thing to do !!!!! Should have left it as a Business Coupe. It is two bad Ford did not assign a different body number to the 1929 Business Coupe with Oval Windows. Ron |

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
Mine is firewall dated for either March or May of 29, but the number is not clear, so I'm not sure. Any other 54-A who can provide a firewall date?

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
Ford Canada did market the Business Coupe, but appears not to have assembled bodywork. 1928 Bus. cpe's were exported to their overseas markets; there are some in New Zealand, a very few in Austraila, & some went to Sth. Africa ,Malaya& India. They all would have Canadian engines, but the US welded & built bodies. They do not appear on Canadian export sheets in 1929. One óval window'Coupe was seen many years ago here in NZ which had been 'trucked'.

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
In conversations with other 1929 Business Coupe owners with oval windows, March is the earlist date I've heard mentioned and those dates were mid March dates.

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
i think i have a business coupe body. it has an interior configuration like the last post. with the curved metal bar that goes arount the oval window and the rear bow attaches to. unfortunatly, i don't have the window frame itself.
my question, i've seen pics with what looks like a bigger window than the one in the above post. is the window in the above post the correct size? i'm hoping it is, cause i found one that looks like the above post. could someone provide both outside frame size and glass measurements? Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
A couple of questions regarding the quarter window:
1) Is it mounted to the fabric covering alone, like the back-light in a folding top ? 2) (flirting with heresy here) Most Coupe`s of this era with oval quarter windows had them oriented vertically... has anyone seen / mocked-up a 54-A with the window oriented vertically ? Thanks ! SC Frank Last edited by Special Coupe Frank; 09-17-2012 at 07:28 PM. |

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
1. Yes 2. Eww, that would look awful, with the orientation of the brackets it would be hard to due with the correct windows.

Re: 1929 Business coupe with oval windows
I've seen some of them mounted with the window angled the wrong way; low in the front and high in the back. Just looks plain wrong.
