Default You can't fix stupid!

An auto appraiser parked next to me at Iola the other day and we were talking Model A's. He told me about a man that had a beautifully restored Model A, a 1930 Tudor I think he said. He died a couple years ago and the son inherited the car. After some time he called for an appraisal. The appraiser asked what happened to his dad's car? The son poured battery acid all over the car and chopped the top to turn it into a rat-rod. He must have hated his dad or Model A's.

I just wonder what goes on in their heads to do that. I've never seen any redeaming factor in a rat rod other than "hey look! I'm a slob!

I've always thought rat-rods were kind of cool. However I also always thought they were made from junk people found laying in boneyards.

Never would have thougyht someone would go out of their way to destroy a car.

I always thought that a ratrod looked like an uncompleted car. Where will these cars be 3-5 years from now? I don't see a continued trend for ratrods. Maybe I'm wrong.

BTW my speedster is a chassis with a junk cowl section. The cowl could be removed and stock body installed. Nothing was modified to make the speedster.

I actually enjoy looking at rat-rods, the ones that are made up of a hodhe-podge of different parts from the scrap pile.
What this kid did, was just plain "stupid", as stated.

What a slap in the face to the Dad's memory. Why not sell the restored car and build a rat rod from junk similiar to what sandmountainslim had started. Does anyone know what happened on that project? I've not seen a post in a while.

Heard he hated his Dad.....

No really fellows, it all worked out in the end.... he gave himself his just due, an appraisal not really
worth much at all-his choice.

Shameful! He deprived his father's grandchildren and others of a heritage that cannot be replaced.

I once heard a debate on what was the worlds largest problem. Suggestions ranged from not enough fresh water to war. Perhaps they could all be boiled down to poor mental health. It manifests itself everywhere from road rage to ethnic cleansing.

Ditto. I agree with all those of us who agree that a piece of history is no longer. BUT I also do not think policing what people do with their personal possessions is merited or needing to be spawned, just because we enthusiasts have a passion. Lenin, Hitler, and Hussein were passionate people too. Whether or not he had something against his father is also none of our business. The "restoration gestapo" need not exist. Of course I say this partly tongue in cheek, as this is about cars. But one could see how this thought process spills over into policing everyday life, right down to my neighbors monitoring how many cars are in my driveway, how I discipline my children, and how much soda I consume, so as to protect me from myself.

So the solution is to buy up all the A's we can as a collector/restorer body, preserve their originality, enjoy them as they were meant to be to, protect them and train our future generations to appreciate A's, therefore keeping them from "stupid."

i love hot rods. i have no problem building one when you buy a body in a field with no other parts. i hate to see a whole car cut up though. its a shame. when there gone thats it. youll never see someone undo a hot rod. never heard of unchopping a car.
