Default u joint grease

Hi All,

I went looking but I could not find a reference for greasing the U joint. I know I saw recommendations here at some point. I did find a reference to Mystik JP6 as a general purpose grease though. any recommendations?

Mike

Take the speedo drive clamshell off (2 bolts), then pump grease in to the u-joint until you see it at the speedo drive gear. Replace the clamshell.

Thereafter- Give it a pump or two whenever you grease the chassis. It will eventually work its way up the speedo cable and keep it lubed also.

Sorry, I am looking for a brand to use. I have heard about the above brand or one from Cat/John deere as well?

Here is old dummy again. But how does a person get the grease from a tube like mentioned above if you have one of the old style guns that don't let you put the whole tube in the gun?

most greases are available in cans as well as tubes. I haven't bought a tube in decades. Just use a putty knife to fill the grease gun.

Oops! Sorry. Misread your post.

I use the red grease that Tom recommended a few years ago.

Not very often right now, especially since it's been laid up in the garage now for 2 seasons.

Realistically, once or twice a season. The way you drive yours, probably needs it once a month.

Originally the joint was kept lubed by the gear lube (600) passing the rear transmission bearing.

Thanks for the info. This is what I find I have to do if I want to use my "old" gun. But I did buy a new manual one that uses the tube inside of it, from Harbor Freight and it does work OK. But old "stuck in the mud" just can't forget the old one I had since high school days!

For the universal joint, Ford specified to use “universal joint” grease which was 600w oil thicken up with sodium tallow soap. Ford also stated that the universal grease was not as thick as wheel bearing grease.

The specification I found for Universal Grease in the November 1932 Ford Service Bulletin has a ASTM Worked Penetration of 310-330 which equates to NGLI 1 “tomato paste” grease.

A lot of people use the John Deere "Corn head Grease" for the universal joint which is an NLGI grade is 0. This may leak out more than the thicker NLGI grade 1 specified.
