Drop the pan for this? About all you can expect is a lot of frustration and oil leaks for no reason.

For the most part the “Stuff” just lays there. I can tell you stories of what I have found in reciprocating aircraft engine oil sumps.

There seems to be people of two minds here. Leave it alone or take it apart. I am in the take it apart mind. But I like to work on cars and feel that if I take things apart I know more about the car. I have never had a problem putting things back together. My pan leaks are fixed as well as any problems that I find. But I can understand were someone would not want to disturb anything for fear of adding problems.

Is the shim “new” never installed? If it was in place it would beat beat up pretty bad and the bolt hole torn. By now you would have some pretty good noises coming from the engine.

The only thing I found in oil pans/sumps that will give problems is the stinking dreaded RTV/Silicone. It will get into the pickup screen.
