Default 1940 ford crank pulley on 1938 crankshaft

I purchased a 1938 ford flathead to run in my 40 sedan. I was unaware the crankshaft was lengthened in
39 to account for the hub with the fan. Does anyone have any idea how to use the 40 hub on the earlier crankshaft?
Thanks
Dave

There is no way that I know of . . . but given the nature of flatheads, somebody probably conjured up something custom in the past. Keep in mind that the longer crankshaft snout helps center the longer pulley - which has a fan running on it. The last thing you want is any vibration/wobble or an out of balance situation . . . things can come apart quickly!

Thanks. I was afraid of that. Do you think if I could find a 39 to 41 221 crank I could have the mains ground from the 2.5 to the earlier 2.4? The rod journal diameter is the same. And the stroke is the same. Or do you think I'm off base here?

I've got a 37 engine in my shed and it has a 39 Deluxe front pulley fitted. Give me a few days and I'll pull it off, take photos, let you see how it has been done.

Brian, does the 39 pulley also mount a fan? I'd be very wary of hanging a fan off the front - without the support of the longer snout. I bet Ford extended the snout for just this reason.

Dale, yes, you know a 39 Deluxe has a crank mounted fan. I don't know if a fan was fitted to this particular engine, but but why else would someone have adapted the later pulley? I did not perform this modification; the engine, when I got it, was so equipped. I will post pix in a few days, currently away from there.

They made a crank extension. Threaded into the crank and add about a 1 1/2” it also has a key way on it. If you need one I have them.

For any of you all that have wondered just what Fred (barnfind08) might have stuffed-away in his nine or so buildings, this should tell ya that he has boatloads of some pretty damned obscure stuff sitting on a shelf just waiting for your project! It don't get any better, OR any easier than sending him a PM for your needs! His stuff ain't foreign-made crapola, either. It's all good ol' Henry Ford parts from back in the day.

nvtinman, when you buy an extension from barnfind08 please take pictures of it, and pictures of installing it, and installing the fan, then post them here. I would love to see pictures.

Many years ago I had a 41 Conv with 38 engine with an\ crank extension. Thought it was a custom made part but now find they were available. Fred is amazing.

Sorry have been so long to reply and thank all of you for your input. Been a tough couple of weeks dealing with family issues. Barnfind08 I definitely am interested in one of the extensions.
I'm new to this so don't know how personal contacts work. Do I post my contact info or is there another method you all use?

That 39 pulley on the early crankshaft in my earlier post; someone has bored the pulley out and pressed in a sleeve with the correct bore and length to suit the snout of the earlier crankshaft. And lengthened the crankdog thread.

He CAN'T send Fred a PM, as "nvtinman" only has 3 posts to his name.

nvtinman - You don't YET have the privileges to use the FordBarn 'personal message' (PM) system until you have at least 10 posts to your credit. Nevertheless, you can contact "barnfind08" via normal methods BELOW. Welcome to The 'Barn!
