A 1936 Ford Coupe garage find 15 years in the making…
15 years ago I was driving down the street where I grew up and caught a glimpse of a Ford wide 5 wheel and bias ply tire under a garage door that was cracked open a few feet. Later that day I stopped to inquire about the car and the owner told me it wasn't for sale. I was shocked that the '36 Ford 5 window coupe had been tucked away in that same garage, literally 500 feet from where I grew up, since I was 5 years old. The garage was never really opened so I literally passed by thousands of times without even knowing what was hiding right down the street.
Over the last 15 years I've stopped by every now and again when I would go home to visit my parents to chat with George the owner and let him know I was still interested if he ever decided to sell the car. I hadn’t been over in the last 4 years or so but a few months’ back I stopped by to say hi and George had a different tone about the car. He said he had been thinking about me the last few months and had remembered my passion for old cars and told me how much he appreciated me stopping by to say hi over the years. When I left he asked for my number and said he was thinking he's finally about ready to part with the old coupe. Last Thursday, I decided to give George a call to check in and after chatting for a while, he told me to come on by and we could talk more about it. I showed up early last Friday morning at George’s place and we made a deal. The ’36 Ford 5 window coupe I’ve been dreaming of owning for the last 15+ years is finally mine! Could not be more stoked!! So after digging the car out of the garage, George pulls out an old tow bar that he received with the car when he purchased it back in 1975 and we flat towed it up the street to my dad’s house. The coolest thing about the car is the fact that George had basically collected 3 of everything for the car over the years. 3 ’36 flathead motors, 3 sets of fenders, 3 grille shells… The amount of extra parts is almost overwhelming! I still have boxes of parts to sort through so watch for some extra ’36 Ford parts in the classifieds here shortly! J Plans for the car are still coming together but can’t be more excited to get this car on the road after almost 50 years of sitting in a garage! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9n720dSwB8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yON-ckOlXWU |

Neat! It's almost ready! Just weld the doors shut, add a hot flatty and a 3/4 ton rear, reinstall the radiator and hood, and head to the nearest dirt track! Oh, don't forget the hook on the dash to hold the trans in second gear!
You've even got the tow bar already. |

You are a lucky man.36's don't pop up all that often, especially like that one.
My '36 sat in my neighbors garage for over 20 years in pieces waiting to be street-rodded.I rescued it and went back to original(aside from the colors). Fortunately, he didn't throw anything out so I had pretty much everything it needed to become a whole 36 again. Have fun with your project and don't forget to let your friend take it for a spin.At one time, it was his dream too. |

Sutton Speed, you've really got a good neighborhood! A very nice car, and a whole lot of spares, jackpot! Thanks for sharing the story with us.
There sure are a lot of 'wrong' ways to finish this car. https://www.google.com/search?q=1936...w=1229&bih=587 Everyone has an opinion, but if this one (below) was a Deluxe with blackwalls, then it would just about ring the bell for me! One last thought... Looks like the Hershey swap meet landed in your yard! SCORE!

Truth. Easily done, have one of each! I'm a lucky dude, got a '35 Fordor trunk, for all-weather operations, and a '36 Phaeton that is just a kitten (thanks Charlie NY for all the vital bits), for when the weather is not snowing. (I've used the curtains several times but they're just tease, you WILL be getting wet.)

Congrats, my Dad's first car when he got back from WWII was a '36 rumble seat coupe. I always wanted one but couldn't afford one, have fun with yours.

What a great looking Ford!
Having too many parts is a "nice problem". Take your time and enjoy the project. |

Re: A 1936 Ford Coupe garage find 15 years in the making…
Am reading a "people movers" book ATM about busses in Victoria from 1912 to 1992.
I read last night that ford V8 sidevalve busses were notorious for the tops of the pistons breaking off at the oil ring land. Now I can see why from one of your pics. They said , they usually just removed the plug and drove back to depot slowly. The broken slug of piston must have just wedged up top just out of the way. Has this ever happened to any old timers here ? BTW, did you do the vintage crossword before you uncovered the screen? |

A truely great find!
If it were mine, I'd keep that one as stock/original as possible, but then that's really your call. Keep us in tune with your project. Always enjoy seeing these finds go back together and get on the road again.
